"I had this link posted in the "Everything Synth" section, but it really should be here. Here's a link to hear Alain Thibault's "God's Greatest Gift" composed on a Fairlight. It features a quote from everybody's favorite 40th President, Ronald Reagan and shows a glimpse of what the early digital systems were capable of with a LOT of work. This song could now be composed on a laptop while riding the bus.

Didn't the Amiga sounded quite a bit better than this back in the day.
ReplyDeleteyup... more fun to use too
ReplyDeleteit also had the best crash screen in history of computing
but as to this track: personally i think this kind of Art of Noise type sound is pure shit as well - however i do realize it was the hotness back in 80s
I think most things composed on Fairlights sounded kind of "Art-of-Noise-ish". I like that kind of stuff...I like doing similar things using my $19.99 Acid DJ. I know most of the readers here are mostly into analog stuff, but the early digital systems and techniques were so different from analog, I thought it was refreshing. Now the pendulum is swinging the other way. Maybe digital will become all the rage after they have invented "nano-quantum" synthesis. I can see it now...the Yamaha CS-90 featuring string theory sequencing and 6 flavors of quark-based synth-ampling. Ah... to have the simple programming interface of V.A.S.T. again...
ReplyDeleteThis was nice to hear just for reliving memories. I was an avid reader of Keyboard magazine during this era. Good times. I wish someone would post the many other floppy records that accompanied the magazine. Seems there was a Sequential MAX demo and some other interesting tidbits around this time period. I guess I threw all of mine away. :-(
ReplyDeleteFunny you mention that. A few more are on the way. : ) They will go up tonight.
ReplyDeleteholy moly, you weren't kidding. :-) great stuff!
