Dave's Studio

Dave of umop and our favorite synth comic strip, The Packrat, sent me this shot of his new studio. I asked him if I could put up a post and he gave me the thumbs up. You can see other content Dave has contributed to Matrixsynth including synth videos, in these previous posts. BTW, be sure to check out PONG, Dave's retro band.

Update via Dave: "I actually only have one more show with Pong, on Thursday the 24th at Rookies in Cromwell, CT. I'd love to meet feelow synth nerds who happen to be in the area."

  1. Does anyone know where to get those a-frame multi-tier keyboards stands? They used to be everywhere now I can't seem to find them at all in the states.

  3. holy crap beale...I was just about to ask the same thing...

I also wanted to know if they sell extra arms for the top level of the a-frame so I can mount multiple drum machines & large stomp pedals on the top row....

i see so many damn X one level fold up stands out there but nothing for multi level, multi-unit per row stands out there for stacking your synths vertically

  4. I've been looking too, and onstage looks like one of the few out there that are making them.

Their website ain't so good, so just search on KS7902 or KS7903 (3 tiered version) on amazon.com.

If anyone out there knows of a place that retails them on Calgary, email me at gbc02 at shaw.ca.

    Thanks

  5. you will go made looking for a new A frame rack. Ultimate used to make the one but apparently they have been discontinued and I had to buy a display model from a shop I found online.

Everything is wobbly X-frame now. If you go into GC and ask for the A-frame they will give you that crazy glazed over look. You know the one.

The Onstage versions don't seem as sturday as the Ultimate ones, but I only have the picture to go by.

  6. you should be able to buy one direct from ultimate. I have no idea on earth why they stopped selling those but I noticed that about 8 years ago or so. Ridiculous. I bought an a-frame and several parts direct from Ultimate Support in the past.

  7. I've been mourning the loss of Ultimate's A-frame stands as well. They used to have a whole LINE of stuff from which you could build until your studio was a maze of black tubing: the Thinkertoy line. It was just the best. Now they only do the X-frames and those horrid never-gonna-trust-em Apexes.

Hopefully there was some good, valid reasoning in their stopping making those, because if it was just one of those 'don't feel like it'-sort of decisions, someone needs to go to wherever they're run from and apply some theraputic smackdowns, as that was one of the dumbest decisions since...well, take your pick.

  8. Don't sell the Apex stands short. They've been holding some pretty big stuff for me (Macbeth M5 and more)and can add many tiers. However, they are back ordered too. I never liked the A-Frame stands, they don't hide behind the synths like Apex do and they look kinda dated. I too am miffed there is nothing but the non-height adjustable OnStage/Quick-Lok, X crap. Almost like no one supports synth players anymore.

  9. yeah that's it, thinker toys. I bought many parts from them over the years. I guess maybe they don't make the tube a-frames and parts anymore. Last time I bought parts was probably 7 years ago. I know they stock and cut the aluminum tubes and make some of the parts because they still are the oem supplier for the stands for the JBL Eon speakers I worked on at work.
Here's a pic of my bedroom studio from '99. It was all thinker toys. I had a tier for a keyboard, a tier with long arms for my mixer and monitors, a couple wings for my small synths, and a platform to support the qs8 controller.
Sorry for busting in on your thread, nice studio by the way - everything within an arms reach - that's the key.

  11. I think the reason why is that Ultimate may have sold or licensed their stands to Roland for the V-Drum series. Still, I have no idea why that would cause the 'apache' to just disappear.

    [edit]

I just peeled away the 'Roland' label from one of the pieces from a V-Drum kit and underneath it in the plastic composite was the word ULTIMATE.

  13. Wow....too bad that is German, they have quite a variety!

  14. Jaspers won't ship to the USA, unless you want to pay more than the stand itself for shipping.

  15. My A-frames have been with me since the '80s. I've got another one in black not pictured, but there's no damned room in this basement for it.

The little silver one pictured is perfect for Minimoog-sized keyboards. Don't ask me where it even came from, but it's OLD. I got it free from a buddy of mine & I have no idea where he got it. The Gift Horse. Who knows.

I've also got three of the Apex stands and absolutely swear by them too, but only for live use. A four-keyboard rig looks great on two stands at 45-degree angles, with the boards stacked in a staggering, alternating sandwich. You'll see what I mean if you can make the Pong gig. :o)

  16. I believe that Ultimate quit making several lines when they started outsourcing most of the manufacturing. Mel Blankenship was the guy to call there and he would make up anything for you. As far as I can tell, he's no longer with the company. I would really like to get my hands on a few dozen of the 1-3/8" to 1-1/2" collars.
