Howard Jones Retro set
YouTube via DIGITALSCREAMS.
"If you enjoy live synth music then goto http://www.howardjones.com/hojo.html and buy his 20th Anniversery Concert Live at the Shepherds Bush Empire"
Anyone know if these are one off shows showcasing his vintage gear or did/is he actually taking them on a full tour? Would be cool if he started using them for all of his shows.

whoa 2 prodigy....
ReplyDeleteThe 'retro' set from this concert is a real synth treat. Get the DVD.
ReplyDeleteBefore 'New Song', Howard 'live' programs the Pro-One step sequence that runs through the whole song (triggered by the TR-808).
You can see at times he's struggling with the tuning on one of the Prodigys.
Between each song, Howard pauses for a few minutes while he reconfigures each instrument. While do this he chats with the audience.
Generally the syths are used as follows: Prodigy 1 - Mono leads, Prodigy 2 - Bass, Juno60 - 'piano', Jupiter8 - poly leads, Pro-One - TR808 triggered sequences
Thanks. I just added the DVD to my birthday list. Can't wait to see all of it. The fun part of this is listening to the individual synths and watching him tweak and play them. It's almost like the show is just as much a show on vintage synths.
ReplyDeleteGlad I wasn't at that concert....
ReplyDeletesnooze fest
Snooze fest, yah kinda. I never got into his music, I much preferred Thomas Dolby but now he's a Workstation/ VA / VSTi nut. I'd get this just for the synth sounds. Any other cool retro DVD's filled with analogs? Can't count on Kraftwerk either ;(
ReplyDeletesnooze fest? are you kidding me? you guys are L.A.M.E. !! Go crank your Emerson til your mom tells you to turn it down! ;)
ReplyDeleteis this old fart still alive ? ! :)
ReplyDeletewhoa, hojo VS. thomas dolby "retro" match!?!?
ReplyDeleteI particularly like HJ setting up the "New Song" sequence on the Pro One, and the great bass on "New Song" and "Bounce Right Back". He always was good at synth-bass (example: DX7 on the single "Things can only get better").
ReplyDeleteI few other things I noticed:
HJ often sets the sustain to max on the 2 Prodigys so that he has time between notes to play other synths or tweak knobs (he flicks the 'Release' switch to cancel a playing note).
The Juno-60 pad and Jupiter-8 'whistle' on "Hide and Seek" are very nice!
On some tracks he changes the TR-808 drum pattern between chorus and verse. Some considerable effort must have gone into setting that TR-808 before the concert.
