Neither one is going up on eBay. I bought the Rogue new in 1982, and will likely own it (as well as the LP) until the end of my days.

ReplyDeleteThe Rogue seemed a bit brighter on some of the patches, but overall, pretty damn close!!! Hardly discernible!

Thanks for posting these. They're closer than I would have thought. I think the Rogue has a slight advantage, though. That sucks for me. I only have an LP.
ReplyDeleteMost of my synths are vintage, but for this comparison I have to go with the LP. I think it sounds balls-out better than the Rogue. It has the edge, in my opinion.

Nice! Perfect documentation on my opinion the the LP sounds like a VA Moog emulation. The Rogue is thicker and more liquid, and cuts sharper on every patch!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like the Rogue mixer is in "Overdrive" territory. That could account for some of the sound differences.
ReplyDeleteWow, you can really hear the rounded corners of the LP waveforms!
ReplyDeleteI encountered the same with my Voyager to Mini comparison. The vintage's waveforms are just a bit more cutting. It does sound like what Dave said, about the "rounded corners", it does sound like the new Moog's waveforms are stunted, muted, slewed in some way.

ReplyDeleteyou'd expect more vintage items to have this trait and the newer synths to sound brighter and more accurate....
wonder if moog did this intentionally because if the new synths sounded bright then the older ones then everyone would be crying like a baby "wah wah the old synths sound so much WARMER, the new ones are bright & digital sounding"

just sounds like the filter on the rogue has more bleed thru.. (which you would expect from older, less tech chips)

it would be more interesting to hold some sort of blind A / B test to see what people would say for multiple examples. i bet an average of responses would show that people can't really tell the difference. in the end, its not the tools its how you use them. go make some music.

ReplyDeleteKeep in mind that I was making an effort to make the LP sound like a Rogue, not the other way around. Given that it has more features/options, the LP is definitely capable of generating timbres that the Rogue simply cannot do.
benjamin if you cant tell the difference in sound between those two keyboards you need your ears checked, or get out of the sound business
ReplyDeleteInteresting, but flawed. The Rogue has one of it's oscillator set to square wave, not on the LP. The resonance of the filter is set higher on the LP than the Rogue.
ReplyDeleteIf you want to compare apples with apples, at least set the two synths exactly the same. And please don't drown the results in reverb.
Nonetheless, this was a nice attempt.
