ReplyDeleteit should be obvious why the multi goes for this price. it's not modulationally crippled like the phatty - and is one of the only moogs ever with pressure 'force sensor' routable to pitch, filter, pitch&filter, waveshape(!), and hard sync. the fact that this one for auction has a kenton fitted puts it over the top. I'm not a shill for this auction, I just happen to own a multi and want to stick up for them in the wake of less creative products moog has unveiled.
ReplyDeleteI think the point is that it's described as restored and one can see visible rust on the OUTSIDE, so how well the rest of it is INSIDE is a big question.
ReplyDeleteI hear those force sensors don't stand the test of time and that Multimoogs are a chore to calibrate. So getting a good one would be important, yes?
With a Multimoog on Ebay you're at the mercy of what it looks like and the seller's description.
No warranty either.
this family of moogs are a VERY different animal from the LP.
ReplyDeleteI picked one up a couple years back and spent months cleaning and calibrating it.
We are talking about a synth that takes about 15 mins to 'warm up' before it can keep tuning.
Very dark and chaotic sounding. Not the kinda synth you would typicly use for crisp leads and basses.
There is a simple mod for the VCF that involves soldering in a single capacitor that improves the low-end of the VCF to make it a bit more suitable for bass.
These Multimoogs are extremely tempermental but also truly unique sounding and with all the CV ins and outs on the back it works really nicely with other analog gear. Couple this with a moogerfooger CP-251 and you are cooking with gasoline!
As mentioned before, this is one of the only moogs ever to implement aftertouch (force sensor)
$1500 is alot for a multi but if you consider it comes with a hard case and a kenton, its really not that outlandish a price.
Oh and by the way, the rust on the screws adds character. ;p

I had a micromoog a few times and modified the vcf. Then you got 1 damn nice monosynth!
ReplyDeleteSure the Multimoog offered a generous amount of cv in and outs but it's certainly not moogs best effort.It was primarily designed as a cheaper alternative to the minimoog,offering a bit more beef than the micromoog. For all of it's modulation possibilities it
ReplyDeletewasn't regarded as a success story for moog. I had one years ago and enjoyed it. The pressure sensitive keyboard was it's best feature.
The Phatty does lack to some degree the modulation factor that the Multimoog has, but bang for your buck, the Little Phatty has got it hands down over it's esoteric older brother.
