"One of the coolest instruments out there. The vocoder shapes its envelope and filters by any sound source fed into it, your voice or even a drum loop can be used which is then applied to another sound source, typically a synth pad. This creates a very unique and famous robot-like sound.
Aside from the 10-band vocoder, the VP-330 added a string synth section, choir and a human-voice sound, both of which are quite excellent themselves. Its 3 sound sections offer a few different presets that can be slightly edited with de-tuning and vibrato. The VP-330 is one of the best Vocoder synths ever and although there are many other types of Vocoders, none sound as good as this!"

VP-330 famously used by Laurie Anderson in the O Superman video (which I'm just uploading to my website as we speak, eeerily!).

A Roland synth tech I spoke to about 10 years ago said that the synth part of the VP-330 is almost identical to the RS-202.
I can't imagine how you could get 10 bands of vocoding & a top-down dividing synth into something that you could easily carry that seems to remain quite reliable. They're a lot of them around, and people still use and abuse them -- I've not heard of horror stories of bands touring with them and having to take three along as spares *cough*polymoog*cough*.
Strangely "most unreliable moog" gives me NO hits in Google. Weird. I'm sure that will change, though.
I have a Roland SVC-350 Vocoder, but would LOVE to also have a Roland VP-330 Vocoder Plus Mk-1 (as this one is) and a Mk-2!!!
