Site Issues On Mac - Should I Cut Posts Down on Main Page?

See this post. I've had another report come in via email on the site being super slow and/or ultimately hanging on Mac, both Safari and Firefox. My stats show approximately 36% of visitors are on Mac. I need to understand how big of a problem this is. If you are on Mac and are not having any problems please post a comment. If are having problems after trying some of the tips in the previous post, please comment.

I currently have three days worth of posts on the main page before the archives. I do this so you have time to catch up on the main page and in case comments are active for a given post. Also on the old version of Blogger there wasn't an "Older Posts" link on the bottom of the page. Now there is. With that along with how much I do post, I'm thinking of cutting down to two days as you can always just click on the "Older Posts" link on the bottom of the page to get to the next day. Let me know what you all think. I can also limit it by number of posts as well. Take a look at my posts over the last three days and let me know what you think would be a good number before you have to click next.

  1. Problem occurs for me with Firefox on Mac, but not Safari. It has to be a bug with Firefox.

I am happy to switch to Safari myself.

    Bloody Firefox.

  2. I often have page loads time out on my Mac, using Safari. But I think that's got to do with the fact that I'm using a dial-up, and there doesn't seem to be any way to tell Safari to restrict the number of simultaneous TCP sockets it opens -- it apparently tries to download every photo on the page at once, and eventually the server times out on about half of them.

  3. On Intel Macbook Safari 2.0.4 is ok but Firefox 1.5.0.11 notoriously slow and occasionally hangs.

  4. I've always used OS X and Safari to view this site, and have never had problems with the page loading or even with embedded clips playing, for what it's worth. I started out viewing the site on a PowerBook G4, and am now using an Intel MacBook, still with no problems. I'm currently using 10.4.9 and Safari 2.0.4, but my experience with the site goes back to 10.3 at least.

  5. I'm having this problem with firefox 2.* on my mac. Is it just just the amount of posts or is there some embedded object or process that is doing it? I know too many flash objects can cripple firefox(mac).

  6. this has nothing to do with mac os x. it's a memory problem and you're finding a correlation where there isn't really one. this site works fine on all my macs (2 intel, 2 quad ppc).

cutting down the number of posts on the main page is a good idea anyway, so go with it.

  7. Mac osx safari 2.0.4 No problems with this or previous versions, i have noted that blogger sites in general have trouble loading and time out if my net connection goes slow or flaky, a router reboot and its fine wherebye on the same flaky connection crunchgear for example will load even if its slow.

  8. Never a problem on Safari 2.0.4 on Tiger.

  9. I got 2 gigs on my browsing mac, and it seems to stop with firefox -- not memory (I checked that). It is some other UI behavior. You can still close the frame and window, so Firefox is responding. It's some sort of flash bug with Firefox.

Same page loads just fine on poor G3 laptop mac with Safari (also hangs Firefox on G3).

Problem is not RAM. It's Firefox and something on the page.

Note: It doesn't seem to puke on big archives either. Maybe just something recently in the latest posts.

  10. I've never had a problem, and have been viewing via Safari on a number of macs, going back a couple of years. I didn't even have any problems on a 400mhz G4.

  11. The hang up seems to have to do with a stats thing (probably a counter), the youtube and myspace videos.

I don't know if there's anything coming from the EBAY feed but that could contribute.

It's better on Safari but of course Safari has been updated in a long time.

My suggestion is to have links to videos instead of embeading them. That would probably help.

For me it's bad enough that I have open Safari to view this blog about every two or three updates.

  12. It's definitely a Firefox problem...but the fact is, Firefox is convenient in the way it deals with certain web content, so a lot of us do like it out here.

I have found a workaround for the Firefox hangups, however. It seems that if the window load hangs, doing a minor (as in tiny) resize of the window breaks the jammed content problem loose and the page finishes loading normally. So as long as you know to do that little thing, I don't see as how having a lot of content is a problem. You just need to know the 'trick'.

  13. I generally use OmniWeb, which works just fine on the site, but I don't recall any Safari problems whenever I've used it.

  14. Oops, forgot the other half of the question. I would actually rather have -more- posts on the main page. I usually come here every day, or maybe every other day. Sometimes, though, I may go for several days without checking in. I would definitely prefer to have three or four days of posts, rather than only two days.

  15. On a Mac - mostly Safari - no problems really. Blogspot has always been slow IMO.

  16. I'm on Mac 10.4 (Safari) and I do not encounter any problems.

  17. Works for me on Firefox or Safari on Mac.

  18. I just set it to show the last 40 posts which is currently all the posts yesterday and today. Let me know if that made a difference.

  19. "The hang up seems to have to do with a stats thing (probably a counter)"

What made you say that? When it hangs can you tell what it's hanging on? I'm also wondering if its the Adbrite ads towards the bottom.

To the person that wanted 4 days, thanks but some people are on dial-up believe it or not. I had three days up when my goal was about 5 posts a day. That translated to about 15 posts on the main page. I just cut it down to 40, so hopefully that is good enough. You can always see the full month's posts on the right under archives and you can click on "Older Posts" below to get to what you missed. I think the majority of visitors come a couple times a day so they should be fine with the 40 most current posts.

  20. Interesting. I just noticed something cooler about setting it to 40 posts. If you click on "Older Posts" you get the next 40 posts and if you click "Older Posts" on that page you get the next 40 and so on. This wasn't the case when it was set to 3 days. You'd only get a handful of posts for each page flipping through the archives, so this is definitely better.

  24. I like using Firefox 4.0.

Even more than Firefox 5.0 - Internet Exploder Crossover Application: Super Internet 3D Exploder 1.0000001.

In the future, all application versions are asymptotic to 1.0.

  30. Hi
Yes-continue to have a bit of crashing and or hanging of the site w/ mac/netscape/IE/safari although less after updating flash.
Two days of past stuff would be plenty.
By the way...the site is amazing !
    Thanks for all the work.

  31. i use safari on mac and the site runs like a charm, everytime...

  32. I am on Mac OSX with Safari* and whilst the site can be a bit slow to load I would prefer keeping the number of posts the way they are now. With the site being updates several times a day people do not always have a chance to catch up with it.

This is a great website - needs to be said.

  34. its ok today but I've been having problems with it over the last couple of days. The page starts loading and then freezes. I use Firefox.

  35. Dunno if you're still reading these comments, but yeah, I've been having a lot of Mac browser issues with matrixsynth (it's now mid september). Firefox freezes and crashes everytime, and Safari works but not well. It doesn't crash though. This happens on both my mac laptop and the mac at work.
