If you've never seen the insides of one of these, it's an amazing piece of machinery. Yep. Machinery. The triggering system is this rubber belt with teeth, which pass over a comb of switches. Different settings involve different sequences of notches, tempo affects the speed of the rubber belt, and so on. Of course, this also has some implicit risks for the potential buyer, because if that belt cracks, breaks, or wears out in some awful way, good luck at finding a replacement. I suppose some sort of electronic triggering for a Sideman could be constructed, though, so it wouldn't be a total loss if someone into DIY found a beltless Sideman and opted to do some tinkering.
