"I made a demo of my Synthacon, which I won after you posted the auction a few weeks ago (Thanks!).
This is a 2:57 song/demo using just the Synthacon for all sounds including drums which I sampled and sequenced. I knew this was the choice for Industrial style sounds and it does not disappoint. In the picture, the little Doepfer mixer module perched on top I use to scale the CV to play it at 1v/Oct. The Synthacon has multiple inputs on the back allowing me to modulate many of the functions with modular envelopes and synced LFO's to expand on it's own two envelopes and allow the third oscillator to be used for pitch rather than as an LFO. The Multi Filter, one of the most popular cloned ones, is what makes this rip but the stable edgy oscs are half the equation."
Great demo. Wow, so that's what people mean when they say the Synthacon sounds intense.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, it doesn't have to. It can also do some of the prettiest, most delicate sounds imaginable, as well. Nyle Steiner's stuff was/is some of the most versatile gear around...I still miss the one I traded, even though it was for an ARP 2600. Someday if/when I have the money, I'm going to have to try and get another Synthacon.
ReplyDeleteGREAT !
ReplyDeleteWTB: Synthacon dual voice
ReplyDeleteanother nice demo, R
ReplyDeleteyep those are great.. i bought one to flip and then i tried it out. kept it.. use it ALL the time, I wouldnt trade it for an Arp 2600.
ReplyDeleteARGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! You're the dude that out bid me! Its good to see that it went to someone that is using it. It would have sat very nicely next to my EML 101 as well. You have any tricks to get your EML to track with a MIDI > CV convter?
ReplyDeletevery nice demo, and that synth sounds tight as shit
ReplyDeleteBenjamin... sorry, my max bid was beyond beatable only by someone as insane as me. You better snipe the next one at +5K just in case someone else is as nutty or I want two ;)
ReplyDeleteAs for the EML101, I have to cheat the CV input by sending Midi Notes that are multiplied by 3.2 (in Cubase) and that only allows 2 octaves range but I can tap the keyboard to change octave. I use the Ext Osc control input. I also have to use an external Env module to substitute for the Env that will not trigger externally.
Yeah, I definitely did not bid on it to win it. Based on your samples I prolly should have. Another synth I constantly bid are EMS Synthi's but I never win. Every 2 months or so I call EMS to check on the status of the next run. For some reason I can't bid $6k to win a Synthi that's older then me with the hope that one day I'll have a new one. Side note, I've been calling EMS every 2 months for the past 4 years. Grrrrr Maybe I should just throw down on a Wiard?
ReplyDeleteBid to win on a Synthi in the right shape. You probably won't be happy until you've at least owned one.
ReplyDeleteAwesome demo, by the way! Money AND talent!
another one just went buy it now for only 1600.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I would not keep my Synthi over the Synthacon. It's quite a pain to make music with and far more limited sonically with that single LP filter and that Trapezoid Generator which is the only envelope and limited as hell. I like mostly the spring reverb and some of the crazy sounds I get but it's beyond unstable tuning wise.
ReplyDeleteDon't buy a new Synthi, there's no point. A new modular can do more and the parts will be the same. Vintage parts = vintage sounds, end of story.
benjamin, ChamomileShark here..can't get to use my account name since Blogger went beta..I spoke to Robin Wood a few weeks back. He said ring in September. I think they have switched off the Soundbeam production and are now going for the Synthis/VCS3.
ReplyDeleteRe tuning - don't forget with the new ones Robin will do mods for you (actually there are a lot of the mods available)
robins been getting peoples hopes up for many years without delivering much of anything. i agree - you want a vintage synth, buy a vintage synthi, not a modern day one with new parts. wait til you see robins new prices, if he gets his shit together.
