Beatmaking on ReBirth RB-338 (in 3 min)

"Who said "Everybody needs a 303"? Now ReBirth is free, so everyone can have two 303s. Let's make an acid music (in only three minutes)."

  1. Its quite apparent from this video that rebirth is not a very good 303 clone, strange because I was always under the impression that it was supposed to be one of the closest.

Still for the price I guess you can't complain!

  2. Denkitribe rocks. He's got other good vids up on gear like Electribes and the Evolver. Worth a look.

  3. "One of the closest?"

I never thought ReBirth was all that great at emulation. I'm suprised so many others think it is.

  4. If hardware clones using almost the same components don't sound the same then software has no chance, that rubber duck is laughable, rebirth and that audio realism thing are almost as bad. The closest software wise is probably microbe and that is only at certain settings.

Hardware wise the MB33 and Revolution are quite close, followed by xoxbox with the 303 mods (without them it sounds WAY too stiff) the acidlab and oakley.

I should know, I own most of them as well as 2 303's :)

  6. So Matrix, are you going to disable anonymous comments any time soon? Now that you've mentioned it (as have others elsewhere) the opinions of people who can't be bothered to spend a moment or two logging in seem pretty worthless. I mean, if they can't be arsed, why should we care?

  7. Well, I will never get rid of anonymous comments for two reasons, one, I don't believe in punishing the many for the few, and two, much more good comes from them. However, I did offer to moderate them. I put up this poll a little bit ago asking if I should remove negative comments. If the vast majority voted yes, I would have.

  8. Rebirth was really never even close to a 303. It was however the coolest pieces of software around at the time; there weren't many options. I used it for a couple songs in '99 where it was a rolling hi-bassline without much resonance and I don't think anyone would know the difference (or care). I also used D-Lusion rubberduck on a song around the same time. I liked that one too. It wasn't close to a 303 but it was dirty in it's own right - I loved it. The newer AudioRealism Bassline is also really not even close to a 303. The company states it's supposed to be very accurate at modeling all aspects of the 303 but if you've got a 303 or two around you know it's not even close.

  9. Could someone please point me to a video or two on youtube featuring the 303 (except acid trax, that contains a random bassline, nice for that times but a little overdone today) ?
I keep on thinking that this cute small box has little more than documentary value.... especially for the absurd price tags I see around!

But you don't have to model it 100% just like the actual thing - you just have to make sure that the most avid 303 fan with golden ears is fooled. Our ears aren't perfect, our memory isn't perfect, and our perception isn't perfect. The human factor is the weakest link.

This makes software emulation entirely possible. See, it's not hard to build a box that looks and feels exactly the same; it's hard to make it sound the same.
