Daft Punk

Music Thing found this shot of the inside of Daft Punks pyramid. "It looks like: 4 x Moog Voyager racks, 2 x Behringer BCR2000 controllers, and possibly 2 x Lemur controllers in the middle (presumably there's also some computers involved). There don't seem to be any keyboards involved at all." There are some more links and info after the hop. Tom of Music Thing also put the following video together.

Where Daft Punk got their samples from

YouTube via tombola2004.
"Here's where the samples on some of my favourite Daft Punk tracks came from. It's all legit, paid in full, above board. Still strange to hear, though.
The samples were spotted by http://www.ishkur.com/samples/ and the music was collected by http://palmsout.blogspot.com/2007/02/...
I just did the video editing. http://www.musicthing.co.uk"

  1. behringer controllers are shit..

maybe paid in full, but using five minute cuts and not adding or changing anything?

    it's all entertainment I suppose.

  2. I will never understand why "producers" who can afford and have this much gear still need to use other people's songs in their music.

  3. Aw, and i was sure it was just a cassette deck back there.

No keyboards because they are not musicians, they are looping DJs who mangle samples to make it sound like their own. (and usually don't give credit to where it's due)

  4. The real credit should go to the crew responsible for that pyramid and it's light show.

  5. anyone going to RedRocks to see them ?

  6. Hell yes I'll be at Red Rocks.

Behringer BCR's are not shit. There isn't anything else even remotely close to the control/cost ratio of these. The only thing similar is the Mackie C4, but those function quite specifically with most DAWs, I believe.

I'm pretty sure the liner notes of all their albums do give credit to every single sample. Yes, it's a little disappointing to hear Robot Rock and Release the Beast back to back, but Homework is THE house album of the nineties.

What's the matter, not "underground" enough for you?

  7. They are actually robots from 28,000 years before my time, and we want them back.

Please PM me the next time they are in a pyramid, and I'll use the Atlantian time scoop and return them to their own time flob.

  8. ive always had very little respect for daft punk. im glad someone actually made a video of this so i can stop trying to prove to my friends that they arent original.

  9. I guess none of us really do. People call themselves Djs for a reason, when they don't, I suppose this is the result.

  10. They use four G5 towers, three are purely for backup in case there's a crash... From what I've heard, two of the rack voyagers are for flitering and two are synched to Abelton...

  11. I really tried to keep myself from chiming in here but Daft Punk are really great. It may not be for everyone and those who pride themselves in their taste in obscure, strange and uncommercial music may be revolted by the fact that Daft Punk have been a fundamental part of the club scene for a really long time now.
Furthermore, they are nowhere near the level of absurdity that Brittney Spears and Nsync are associated with and they never will be.
It is unfortunate that someone would expose their ignorance of music with statements of harsh insult due to preference and it is quite clear that they are inflexible and unable to expand in their line of thinking to make uninformed, tie it all together comparisons like these.
The album Discovery is beyond any doubt one of the greatest albums in its genre of all time. Many of the arrangements on Discovery were absolutely impeccable regardless of the components of composition.
Some people use synths to make music, some people use samples to make music and most people use both. Please be open to all and don't discriminate just because your preferences aren't in accordance with what is popular.
And no, I absolutely can't stand Brittney Spears or Nsync or anything associated with this kind of marketing tool music.

  12. oh god, i can't believe i'm getting into this...

i know this isn't a britney spears thread, but...
"in the zone" is an awesome electronic music album. i'm not ashamed to say that i truly believe that it is really really good and enjoyable electronic pop music. who cares if it's over-commercialized formula-driven marketing-pop! it's supposed to be dumb, fun, and absurd, it's pop music, for fucksake...

and this is coming from someone who also adores xenakis and feldman and cage and brian eno and throbing gristle and merzbow and ryoji ikeda and yellow magic orchestra and the beatles and michael jackson and whoever else it takes to convince you that it's ok to like stuff that doesn't fit into the limited spectrum of what's acceptable as "intelligent" or "good" music.

"they are not musicians, they are looping DJs who mangle samples to make it sound like their own"
    ... jeebus! are you serious?!
i'm guessing that you probably don't think public enemy, eric b and rakim, dj shadow, beck, james tenney, xenakis, stockhausen, Dr. Dre, RZA, steve reich, timbaland, philip jeck, pierre henry, pierre schaffer, luc ferrari, etc etc are musicians either, becuase they all use samples.

(obviously i'm banking on all this name dropping to give my post credibility. heeha)

some of these posts are hilarious! it baffles me that people can be this closed minded about music at this stage in the game.
it's all music, and it's all valid and useful.

oh, and daft punk are awesome.

    long live internet shitspeak

  13. All this thread did was lead me to YouTube where I saw the Interstella 5555 clips. I've never been that into Daft Punk, it's sort of like I like it when I hear it but don't go out of my way to hear them, but the music paired with that film (the Discovery Album) is great. So I actually bought it because despite what the nonconformists might think -- it's just good.

That said, it's time to listen to some more non-sellout obscure bleep microhouse track that had only 500 copies pressed on red vinyl because, to make money with the music, is so conformist & capitalist. Blech.

  14. Daft Punk is pretty brilliant imo. What they do is art. I haven't seen anyone able to capture what made the 70s cool other than them. The are more Star Wars than George Lucas and the latest Star Wars films. It's hard to describe. Either you get it or you don't. Every time I see a Daft Punk video or listen to one of their tunes, it's there. It's not a matter of liking the music, there is just something brilliant that is there. They are masters of this. But everyone has their own filters on. My wife hates Daft Punks. She doesn't get it. Same for Ween, Primus and other bands that bring something incredibly unique. It's what you create with the samples and the music. Even if it's a homage to times past, if they capture the essence of what they are trying to portray, they've done their job.

  15. Daft Punk are pretty brilliant. It really doesn't bother me that they sample whole tracks. They always put their spin on it and it always makes me go bump. Isn't the bump what matters?

Side note: I'm fairly certain Daft Punk is paying for use of their samples. They are way to high profile for that to go un-noticed.

I wonder if all the haters think that Andy Warhols art was crap because he did the same thing with images.

In the end, everyone is ripping someone else off one way or another. Get over it.

  16. yeh, when it comes to daft punk, i definately dont get it - at all

then again, i get that i dont get it.. whereas many others dont get that they do get it

and on that note - whatever i say is automatically 100% objectively true, and I am the ultimate most important being of all time, ever, past, present, future, and beyond - therefore i am better than everyone else by an infinite amount

  17. great videos too

  18. That's not Lemur controllers, simply the computer screens I guess...

Thomas Bangalter said in an interview that most gear was outside the pyramid, backstage
