No new news here, I just realized that although I've put posts up featuring Forat gear, I've never put one up on the site itself. For those of you not familiar with Forat, from the history page on the site: "Since 1982, Bruce and Ben Forat have provided the entertainment community with first-class music electronics. Since 1986 they have provided service, parts, and modifications to all Linn Electronics products. They revamped the original line including the LinnDrum, LM-1, and LinnSequencer and introduced the world to the F-9000." Title link takes you there.
So, is the F-9000 still in production?
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know how Forat gets the correct lettering silkscreened back onto their customized MPCs and keyboards? I think most of them are a bit tacky (although appropriate for the genre), but I'm guessing that they have a pretty talented CAD guy doing the labels.

Bruce himself couldn't be a nicer guy. He sold me a custom PROM for an SP-12 Turbo that I was repairing.
ReplyDeleteI called him up at 9:30PM on a Thursday night expecting to get his machine. Instead he answered, I told him what I needed, and he called me back about 1hr later and said he had the replacement part (a custom PROM, one of the few irreplaceable IC's in the SP, that he himself had reverse-engineered to extract the microcode). I drove down to his shop at 11:30PM, we tested out his replacement chip on an SP12 he had, I paid him for the IC, and left, getting home at midnight.
Bruce is pricey, but absolutely worth it in my opinion.
i asked forat if the f 9000 was still in production like 4 years ago and i was told that it wasn't.
ReplyDeleteSeems like the kind of machine that some boutique maker has to bring back. I wonder why no boutique brand has made an mpc clone. Some of the smaller companies have great support. Elektron for example have been providing firmware updates for several years for the machinedrum.
