Update: OK, we are back to two. That was easy. I'm not a big fan of change myself when it comes to websites. Just wanted to see what it was like with the labels on the right. New poll below. Leave the right nav on the right or move it over to the left.
Update: I just flipped the columns so the main blog in the center with the main column on the left and the labels on the right. Let me know if this is better or worse in the comments. The votes were 19 for two columns and 3 for three. If you voted and changed your mind on your vote mention in the comments. Also see if this grows on you.
----- OLD POST -----
Just wanted to let you know that I am going to try three columns on the site instead of two. If you see any funkiness, this is why. Please bear with me. The overall look and feel will remain the same.
Almost done. Off to go cook dinner for the family. Let me know what you think. I put the labels on the far right. I'll be renaming them so each one only takes a single line.
OK, made a poll out of this. You decide. Note the site is set to three with the right being relatively thin. It will remain that way with three. I need to crop some of the labels so each one will be a single line.

Well, looks like I will be the first to say that I think it looks way too busy with three columns. I wouls stick to two.
ReplyDeleteThere are still people that use 800x600 res screens... which means that half of the third column is cut off. Making the page scalable instead of fixed width would fix that.
ReplyDeleteThe third column also makes the entire page look a bit busy, no? What about consolidating all the links into one drop down box, either standard html, java, or dhtml?
It's optimized for 1024x768, so yes, 800x600 will be cut off. I'll put up a poll and see what people want.
ReplyDeletewait wait wait....you run this blog -and- cook for your family?
ReplyDeleteDUUUUUUDE. You are the man.
I know I sometimes seem controversial, but I think that right now is the time for less columns and more rows.
ReplyDeleteSo do some rows. Make them scroll like a stock ticker.
Put the main blog post in one row, and the comments for it can scroll below it at a different pace.
It would make a great screen saver.
How bout cutting back on all the damn ads?
ReplyDelete@ above anon:
ReplyDeletethen we would have no Matrixsynth... unless you prefer a paysite.
the balance is rather off right now. maybe putting the current left column to the right and vice-versa would help. still, two columns still the best, imo.
ReplyDeleteSince a week or 2 I get very aggessive Ads that tells me I am using illegal sex stuff (harhar, ok, count gearPORN it!!) and crashes the Browser (minimize to just one ad fake window).. if you could try to avoid those? I have to re.open the browser then and get back and hope the browser will not collapse by force since I am not interested in software of companies who think and do ads like this (any windows alike ad should by considered being not serious anyway)..
ReplyDeletejust a feedback since your email changed and I got it back..
it's hard to watch matrix these days..
The site locks up Firefox on Mac pretty frequently. Please test the site when you go live with updates.
ReplyDeleteno ads = no matrixsynth.
ReplyDeleteI don't see why somebody should get paid for having a fan blog. One day I came to matrixsynth and out of 8 new posts 7 of them were auctions. There is getting paid and then there is exploiting your audience.
I *think* the offending pop-ups came from the Adbrite ads. They have been removed so you should not be seeing pop-ups any longer. If you do let me know, but my guess is it's not coming from this site. I haven't seen any since I removed Adbrite.
ReplyDeleteI have Google Ads (no popups), Amazon affiliate links (no popups as they are not dynamic ads - just a link), Ebay affiliate links (same as Amazon), Shopzilla (no pop-ups as far as I know and I just added these so they were not the culprit from before), and a Bizrate ad which should not have pop-ups either.
As for the site locking up in Firefox, it's a problem with the Mac and YouTube. Sometimes YouTube can be slow causing Firefox to hang on the Mac. I don't have anything on the site that is non standard so there is nothing to test. I'm just using the embedding available. There is no custom code here at all.
"I don't see why somebody should get paid for having a fan blog. One day I came to matrixsynth and out of 8 new posts 7 of them were auctions. There is getting paid and then there is exploiting your audience."
ReplyDeleteI don't put up auction posts for that reason. If you don't like nice images of synths or interesting bits of info, you are definitely not really into synths in my book and you are coming to the wrong site. Now if I took the posts down after the auctions were over you could say that. Once the auction is over it no longer matters. Ultimately it doesn't matter, no one is forcing you to buy anything.
And btw, I put up what I'm interested in putting up, period. I don't put it up for you.
Just have your main page frame set to autoresize instead of it being fixed width and you'll take care of the 800x600 vs 1280 issue...no poll necessary. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks. I thought about that but worried about the formating going off, but.... I think I will try that just to see how it looks.
ReplyDeleteThree columns is cool.
ReplyDeleteTwo columns is cool.
I'll still visit either way:)
checking my stats there's about 1.6% using 800x600 so its not really an issue. the most users got 1280x1024
ReplyDeletepossibly it is cool to have 2 columns because it's ok and well trained by reading newspapers and news on the net in that format.
ads: imo it's very very ok to have ads on the site, since that makes it more easy to keep it running and I am very ok with helping matrix to finance it, ebay links beside the posts are not that annoying, so the only hard to take thing was the porn one whrinking the firefox window & chew it to bits.. seems that one is fixed and thats fine as it now..
about posting auctions or cats on synths is completely the decision of matrix himself, I do not bother but some posts are lost the same day, anyway it is cool as is and I'd like 2 columns if it fits, my screen size allows even to go beyond that but you simply should count in the 1280pix is the "standard" today (I assume 1680 is the size of todays buyers and 1920 that of very near future TFTs) but I don't know you all: I do not get one every year, so I guess it's a matter or 1-5 years and there's still iphone users etc. which is possibly harder times for them.
this is a tech blog, so most users care about computers, too? if so, you can go for 1024 or even 1200 for the next 1-2 years and check your stats for changes..
if you have to scroll it isn't perfect, on newer macs the duo-touch pad helps a lot navigating, but we got old school mouses etc here, too..
in short: choose what you like to..
2 coloumns may work fine with most ppl here..
Thanks. I think I'll keep it as is, optimized for 1024 and the posts on the left. For those on 800x600, they will still get the full posts without having to scroll to the right.
ReplyDeleteAs for "thing was the porn one whrinking the firefox window & chew it to bits.. seems that one is fixed and thats fine as it now.."
I wish I saw that one to see how bad it was. : ) I could have changed my slogan from "everything synth" to "synth meets flesh," "two types of porn," or "giving you all the porn you need."
