  4. Alot of great things have been recorded on cheaper gear. Perhaps things that even the last, and apparently arrogant, anonymous would admire. So where are all your great studio pics with your Buchla system and quarter of a million dollar 80 Series Neve console Mr. Critical Spoiled Poopy Pants anonymous???
    ...Seriously.

  6. "Alot of great things have been recorded on cheaper gear."

Cheap gear is just fine if that's your budget. The point I'm making here is he just bought a TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLAR synth.. why skimp on the rest of your equipment? There's a plethora of options between mackie and neve... how bout an audio interface from apogee, lynx or rme plus a toft 16ch mixer for about 6 grand total. Sure that ain't cheap.. but using a mackie and motu with a buchla is like putting the cheapest oil and gas you can find in your ferrari.

"So where are all your great studio pics with your Buchla system and quarter of a million dollar 80 Series Neve console Mr. Critical Spoiled Poopy Pants anonymous???"

I never said "I" owned a buchla.. but if I did, the last thing I would skimp on is the front end and mixer.

It's a point that's been made many times before.. Mackie and Motu are fine if that's all you can afford.. but if you can drop 10,20 or 30 grand on equipment.. then get a better converter, mixer, cables etc. Take a look a look at all the pics on the net of studios with twenty rare synths and a big mackie in the middle.. how bout a soundcraft, allen and heath, toft, midas or a used trident, soundtracs or whatever.. significantly better mixers that don't cost that much much more.

The audio interface is THE most important thing in your studio and if you're gonna blow a wad of cash, spend it on that.

  8. Very nice demo.

(The banjo comments strike me as sort of like a version of Tourette's syndrome.)

I do apologize that you have made yourself sound like that but I thought the music was "THE" most important thing your studio...

But thanks for sharing what you think "THE" most important thing in your studio is. I am sure everyon feels alot better now knowing that.

  11. Oh, I hear gearsutz is a great place to talk about mixers and other high end studio gear.

But what's cool about matrixsynth is that it's about everything synth.

  13. I know that everyone is bashing mr. anonymous, but I agree with him/her. It is like seeing those gear porn picture threads on forums where people have $35,000 worth of synths and use their computer speakers or some cheapo samson monitors or something. I mean people say things like "oh, the synth sounds so great and thats what it is about" but how do you really know how great it sounds with a crap mixer that is making your signal sound very badly coloured or crap monitors that do not sound at all like the instrument would on a decent set. I don't understand why people (all anonymous mind you) are attacking this guy for making a simple honest observation. I thougt the same thing whne I saw the pic " a buchla synth and a mackie mixer, you got to be kidding"

  14. Though I do disagree about the comment about soundcraft mixers. Those sound like crap for the price they charge, I think most people buy soundcrafts because it is a familiar name, nothing more. If it was about sound there are a ton of better options for the price.

  15. I agree that its a bit strange to have say $30k worth of gear and $1000 of that is your mixer / speaker / converter situation. That being said, I've heard amazing mixes come out of $80 computer monitors.

IMO if you are making good sounds / music does it really matter what your synth / mixing / monitoring situation is? We all prioritize our gear spending differently but the bottom line is: if it sound good then it is good. End of story.

  16. while I sort of agree that the buchla through a mackie is not the brightest of choices, I'll have to say the anonymous is being a bit of a nitpicking jerk to say just that in response to the post.

    cheers, let's keep it friendly

  17. A buddy of mine makes super-great blow your mind beats and all he has is a mono bass amp as his speaker, and an el-cheapo PC.

And we all know that even relatively cheap mixers nowadays are way better than most mixers of years past.

Also, with a mixer, there's a few things that matter: pre-amp's, headroom, noise floor, op-amp speed, yada yada. If you're just mixing a few channels and turn down levels of other channels, and use line-in's vs. preamps, then a mackie is certainly good.

  18. First of all, great site.

Seems to me that this guy is all about live music, and a Mackie works great in most performance situations.

One of the interesting things Buchla did in the 1970's was to build the recording console INTO the synthesizer. The 226 & 227 modules allow direct interface with a 4 (or 8) track professional tape machine, complete with tape monitoring, soloing, effects sends & VU metering.

Furthermore, all Buchla 200 audio runs at +4dBm, so one can patch directly into tape (or fancy-pants converter) without additional preamplification.

(The levels are lower on 200e modules, but, ummm, the LED's are shinier).

The tame bickering on this site about which Minimoog is better doesn't hold a candle to what audio people have to say about each other's signal paths. As an SSL owner, I've gotten bashed more than once by audio purists about the horrible things that a large-frame VCA-laden analog desk does to sound.

Yes, it's always odd to see big manly synths going through little sissy audio, but some of the newer stuff doesn't suck too badly, especially if your synth is outputting healthy levels. I run a Buchla 200 into an Mbox 2 Pro at 24/96 at home, and when I take it to work & listen to it through Apogees & Barefoot Audio monitors, it doesn't sound like much was lost.

  19. Buchla and Hakken, mmmmm dream setup.

Mackie is good board, and maybe an allen and heath might be better but after you blow about 20k on synth and controller, do you have an extra 10k for the interface and board.. hes got a lexicon surround verb.. I mean the signal path seems clean to me.

Also, forget snobbery.. I noticed some audio snobs cant tell the difference in the end of something that was made with digital/analogue, cheap, good gear.. its all about how much work you put into it. Sure great gear makes it easier to obtain a clean glisten but you can still do about 98% of that sound with a good daw and vsts but you might have to put in a few more hours on the mix and mastering.

    IMHO of course.

Hey doctor future, did you ever play in lansing michigan?

  20. > Hey doctor future, did you ever play in lansing michigan?

I think I played Lansing Michigan way back in the year 2107 (ahh, good ol '107), at the new-pilgrim centrist festival.

My records are a little sketchy, because that was a long time ago and a bunch of nanites escaped from the local McDonaldsTron and terra-formed the portion of the continent that contained my iLife backup into a high-saturated-fat patty.

  21. Everyone knows that recording your 200e though a Mackie or MOTU will instantly transform it into a banjo.

  22. holy shit dude banjo jokes are totally last january. get with it.

  23. I run my 200e into an mbox mini or a apogee/rme or a Soundcraft COMPACT 4 mixer (live)...

the 227e is not the "best" sounding output mixer / how many of you 200e owners have "issues" with the inconsistency between output channels? My soundcfaft Compact is better :)

BUT after using everyone elses "surround mixer" from Serge/STS on down (and I have used them all)The Buchla is the BEST most elegant solution yet!

Why would I need an Avalon U5 Cranesong HEDD anyway? Buchla users don't hang out on Gearslutz!

  24. yeah, heads up! a valid point. don't post on the net if you're not willing to take legit/illegitimate abuse/criticism. i've never played a buchla so i can't speak as to the veracity of anon 1's claims; however,I know that speakers and mixers affect how you perceive the music and consequently how your mix ends up sounding on others' home audio/ car/ hi fi's and that makes it doubly important to choose wisely.I think...anyways. Personally, I spend more time thinking about effects, mixers, and speakers since I play other instruments too

  25. Do you think these small synth companies have a high end Neve console or something equivalent in their low budget R&D departments?

    I think not. now shaddup.
