Calling All Deviants!

Deviant Synth needs you!

"Nothing against Matrixsynth or Music Thing, but they are just repeating, ad nauseaum, the same old neuroses of their readers–a gang of middle-aged owners of 30 broken Prophet-5s and/or 120 badly-scratched Fender Jaguars who want to get rich and become “music gods”, without actually doing anything."

Cute. Well, I'm subbed so I guess they will become part of the drivel here. ;) Title link takes you there. BTW, don't forget SYNTHWIRE. And no, I don't have a problem with this. The more the merrier. And they are linking here, so.. : ) Be sure to read their Manifesto in full. It's a good one.

  2. I'd hardly call this a marketing attempt, more an excersize in good fun.

edgy is the new my little pony.

  3. sad marketing attempt = maybe

about as edgy as a ham sandwich.

i might see a couple of points made but most of it is a just a manifestation of frustration. while desperate attempts usually yield interesting results you still have to have some fucking taste.

anyway this already exists - its called getlofi.com not that matrix doesn’t cover most of it himself already, he just tries to stick to his theme. commendable.

also that site is shit, come on

i think its time in reintroduce the color wheel – this keeps happening. did you really not pay any attention in art class? i snuck out for smokes too but shit . . . dehydrated piss and Jay-Z(c) blue?

whilst I'm sorry to say I have to agree with some of what he says about the 30 somethings I really detest this turd! Christ manifesto, who the f**k does he think he is, there's nothing worse than forced eccentricity...what a pompus twat! Who really does'nt know much about anything I'm presuming he's about 16???

  8. I don't fault you for not knowing what a 30-something is like, especially musically, because you obviously aren't one so how could you know.

(I find it funny that you make an asinine comment like that, then have the idiocy/blindness to call someone else a "pompous twat".)

FWIW Autechre are mid-30s, and from what I can see, all you young'ins are beating down the door to unimaginatively copy their style(s).

  9. How did we get from 30 broken prophets to 30-somethings?

I thought we were berating middle aged people here. WAIT - IS 30 MIDDLE AGED?

Jeeze. Now I can only make fun of the retarded and morbidly obese. (crosses 'old people' off ok-to-make-fun-of list)

  10. circuit bending = turd sounds for the new millennium

Ok Ok fair enough I shouldn't have said 30 somethings and I wrote this in a bad mood after reading his "manifesto" (considering I'm on the verge of 30 myself)

But do you not find it slightly pompus???

"FWIW Autechre are mid-30s, and from what I can see, all you young'ins are beating down the door to unimaginatively copy their style(s)."

Not me but I'd rather be listening to someones half arsed attempt at plagiarizing Autechre than hereing someone whittling on about the nuances of Keith Emersons virtuoso style of playing.....and thats saying something! I just feel synths and there uses should have gone beyond all that and he made a fair point! Whats the point in owning a perfectly usable synth if your just gonna pretend that your Rick wakemen or playing with ELP? It's pure self indulgence! Much like what most of the afore mentioned artists suffered from.

    ReplyDelete
  12. to add to what I wrote above^^

What I mean by "perfectly usable synth" is a vintage synth that still has potential to be used in a new and interesting manor!

  13. lame

Getlofi already does what they want to do.

  14. Well, my manor was built in 1890, so I guess I'm excluded AGAIN.

  16. The next music revolution isn't being written by 40 year old collectors of analog gear, it is true.

But neither is it going to be written by the circuitbenders and netsonix synth guys who are too busy bending their SK1 and listening to Japanese noise music.

The next revolution will come from some kid in the ghetto making music on a crappy laptop... and will be laughed at and ridiculed by the first two groups of people, until it takes over the world. The people in the first group will then collect the kids junky laptop for $10,000, and the people in the second group will have gone deaf from malfunctioning Barney toys to make music.

Yep totally agree except maybe the ghetto part lol!! and also amongst any movement including circuit benders and the like there will always be one who stands out from the crowd...well at least I hope there will be! I like the idea Of circuit bending in princible it just doesn't always work out in practise.

  18. Will the next music revolution hurry up and arrive already?
I'm tired of the current music revolution.

    ReplyDelete
  19. actually sorry to do this again but to add to that^^^

Usually I would apply this to most things if you've circuit bent a toy or instrument why not use it with something else rather than other circuit bent items, that usually seems to be the problem!! I would'nt like to just use one synth to make a track and usually its not possible if your going for a full arragement of sounds, unless of course your making ambient soundscapes (man) or very minimal stuff! ....if you get what I mean!??!

  20. The site was literally launched 2 days ago (from registration to installation of wordpress) so pardon the design.

The manifesto was quickly provided and posted, and unedited. It's got spunk. It's got attitude. I like that. People take themselves and each other too seriously.

The page was set up to allow people to create accounts and join in, so it's a community blog for everyone and anyone to come and add content.

It's not the end of the world - it's a site for yet more gear speculation, interesting links, and it will be supported by weirdo's, eccentrics, snobs of other variety's, and it will be trashed by anyone and everyone that takes offense to the intentionally goading manifesto.

Some of the users (and I consider myself in this camp, which is why I'm doing my bit with the site) have found a nice middle ground of utilizing wacked out and f*d up equipment alongside old standards to actually write music (watch out in the next few months as I have some releases coming out, and no - it's not japanese noise or circuitbent speak and spells mixed with contact mic recordings of scraping a shopping cart). There are some of us (pointing at myself) that don't actively circuitbend, but love to hang with those that do and work with them to record sounds and performances to integrate into our music.

There's a middle ground in all of this, of course the middle ground doesn't exist in the internet, hence the need to polarize to shake the chaff out.

  21. Anyone and everyone?

    Really?

Better reword the manefesto because it seems to spend most of its time excluding people.

And, it *really* takes itself too seriously, unlike most of the comments here.

  22. "Michael set out to create distinct personalities in every one of his musical endeavors; from achingly beautiful ambient electronica, rigorous and energetic hardbeat dance music, classical orchestration, offbeat sound exploration with boutique and arcane instruments and effects, to evocative sound bed design for film work.

Michael frequently writes about himself in the third person in order to add weight and substance to his vacant art school student biography. Signed photos of his 'achingly beautiful' (finger in mouth gag gesture) sensitive self, posing with candles can be obtained by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the address above."

good shot, the beauty of the internet is that once you put yourself out there under your own name you open yourself to such things.

I take full credit for my ham-handed crappy bio that's been up there for several years, it's done me well and it will probably stay up there in that format until a site relaunch.

    Thanks Mr. Anonymous!

the same people that are excluded are just as able to create an account and post. the only barrier excluding them is their own identification with what's in the manifesto, and their reaction to it.

  28. I thought his “Manifesto” was the best hoot I’d seen in a while…until that is I read some of the brilliantly sardonic comments above !! ( …aren’t we synth guys supposed to be far too nerdy for this kind of well-honed wit?!). Although I do enjoy looking at peoples ‘odd’ “circuit-bent” curios, in reality for the most part it’s all pretty idiotic & pointless. You’re as likely to take the world of music by storm with your “bent” Speak’n’Spell to which you’ve added a few ignorantly-placed random wires , as a group of circus chimps would be to come up with the next Pulitzer prize for literature.

  29. it's just so NICE to see that matrix still has so many friendly, friendly friends. Who enjoy backstabbing everyone. And each other.
