am i the only one completely underwhelmed by it's design? it would be nice if the pitch and mod wheels were to the left of the keys, that there might have been a couple sliders instead of knobs. it just looks rather cold and uninspiring. i get a hard on just looking at my andromeda; and the sounds never disappoint. i'm sure this sounds great but most va's are more inspiring than this design.

It is interesting, but it actually is no 'Prophet'. The Prophet sound is really due to the fact that it never had a 3rd oscillator. The solution for that was the poly-mod section. It does have this curious 'modulations' section. However, its possible that having four LFOs is going to make up for this, because ultimately that is what OSC B ends up being used for in the P5. I'd be curious about the range of both the audio oscillators and the LFOs. The I'm going to assume that the dial for wave form allows for blending rather than just selecting a shape, but its more than likely going to be the latter. The 3rd EG is nice too.
ReplyDeleteThe clicky little pill buttons are funky on the evolvers .. the alpha dials are annoying to me because I normally listen to the change in sound when first using a synth and sweeping the pot its full range. I'll have to look at a number read out now and listen to know where the knob starts and begins. But some people really love the alpha dials.
And its not the same design as the MEK. The PEK and MEK both have wheel boxes.
Endless knobs are obviously nice for when you don't want the sound to jump when editing. You can have the knob do nothing until you get to the same point of course, but it's different. I'm good with either myself, but I hate stepped knobs like on the Matrix-12 and the Evolver desktop - I use the knobs to tweak what I am playing real time, not just to create patches to play and I like really being able to adjust settings with fine smooth and subtle transitions. You can't do that with the evolver desktop - step, step, step, step...

ReplyDeleteI am not as excited now as i was a couple of days ago. The construction looks very cheap and there is no external signal input. Also after having heard all the demos (published so far) the sound seems very close to the PEK.
ReplyDeleteAnd why oh why couldnt we get cv/gate in/out and even more important cv input into the vcf. There are still people (like me) who does not use midi.
With everyone shitting themselves so much this synth will be good in Laxative commercials.
