you know... i love DSI, and i think dave smith is truly one of the few true visionaries of synth design.
ReplyDeleteand it's because of this that i'm hoping dave's looking at this picture of self-flagellating dreck and saying, "boys, this is complete shite. let's pull it."
what is this thing, a back-stage pass? if i put it on a lanyard and look stupid, will you expect me to drop to me knees and unzip somewhere near the pimento loaf and the bucket of milwaukee's best?
i wonder what breed of sheep will buy this thing. probably the same ones that complain about "crappy factory presets."
Well, I plan to buy one for myself and I make no apologies for that.

I'm ready to order, but I want to be sure of something: Do we get a signed picture of Dave Smith with this special edition? Is it included in the extra $500?
ReplyDeleteWhy does only the special edition have red LEDs? No equipment should ever use burn-your-eyes-out-blue LEDs. Haven't enough people complained about that already?

I have Evolvers already and owned several Prophets and MPCs in 25 years, never been tired of Dave Smith' sounds.
I know, the P08 will sounds more like a P600 than a P5 but is there any brand out with an analog poly-keyboard that sounds clike that? if yes then I'll buy it!
(...do not keep virtual or anlog modelling keyz, please! ;-)

ReplyDeleteHere is the deal on why blue LEDs are much worse for you than red LEDs - Basically, in a darkened room, blue LEDs are going to blind you. This is really one of the reasons why I dislike bright displays and LEDs because I'm usually playing in low light situations anyway. It takes the human eye at least half and hour to fully adapt to a dark environment. You're going to be using your rods rather than your cones for visual acuity in dark or dimly lit situations. A flash of bright light can partially and momentarily blind you, which I've experienced when looking out over the audience singing a song and then looking back down at the keyboard with a bright display or back lit wheels. But guess what? Rods are not sensitive to RED light, which is why stargazers and astronomers use red flashlights to look at scope settings, star charts and their walking path during night viewings.

seems that the best way to buy a P08 in central Europe is from "Thomann" or "Touched by Sound"
price is: €2195 (cheaper than the PEK!)

ReplyDeleteThe blue and ultra-bright LED technology became available in the late 90's and was a novelty for a short while.
ReplyDeleteThey truly suck for any type of display. They are good for keychain flashlights, short-range headlamps, and such. In other words they are good for shining on things, not shining in your eyes.
Stephen Jones is correct about red being the best color for your eyes. Look in any airplane cockpit, you'll see either dim able incandescents or red LEDs.
Good 'ol green and yellow aren't bad either, but red is the officially the easiest on the eyes.
After humoursly going back and forth between ordering and backing out 5 times in the past 24 hours, I've just ordered my SE. Sweetwater says the orders are coming in fast and they will ship by 9/30.
