Poll: How Many Posts Should I Have on the Front Page

I just set the site back to 3 days worth of posts on the main page. I switched it from 3 days to 40 posts a while back but so much is coming in now I think I want to go back to 3 days. I'm already at 28 posts today. The idea behind three days is that's about as much time it takes for a post to get fully seen and commented on. The concern of course are the load times and scrolling vs. paging through the site. Another option would be even fewer posts but then you would have to click on the "Older Posts" link at the bottom of each page. Also if you are submitting something, with 3 days set you are guaranteed to have the post up for at least that long. Again, the site is currently set to 3 days, so see how you like it. Majority wins on this one.

  1. I never visit the frontpage, so the post count doesn't bother me.
I'm using only the RSS-feeds so the more the better. ;)

  2. I also read the matrixsynth feed. It's blindingly fast without pictures, and I just click through to anything that interests me. But I'm definitely a fan of keeping the front page reasonably compact.

  4. If can keep the old pages from bouncing us to front page when we come back from links and instead back where we came from after we went to the link then I don't care really care how long load times are or not as long as not rediculus 5 mins or something. Voted 3 days, see how it goes. And, THX MatrixSynth!

  5. less than 40 posts. They should be quality posts. I don't need to see every dork who wants to video himself twiddling a modular or playing some crap on a poly. You're doing a service, no doubt, but do you think the blog would hurt from a little qc?

    thanks for asking

Yeah, that annoys me as well. Not sure how to fix that though. If anyone knows feel free to comment or shoot me an email.

  7. 40 is too many. I vote for 3 days' worth. Probably even fewer would be better. I love your blog, BTW!

  10. instead of clicking directly on a link, open the link in a new tab. that way the main page stays where you left it - use it like a table of contents.

if you don't know about tabbed browsing, there's no hope for you

  11. Just curious if you thought about switching to Wordpress? You would have a lot more control and they have a great WP-Cache plug-in that speeds things up considerably. They have way to move a blogger blog to a wordpress blog. Just a thought.

p.s. your insane to post so often. you rock.

  12. not sure if it's related, but ever since the change, the youtube videos seem a bit sluggish...

great blog though.. keep up the great work!

  13. Regarding YouTube, it might be because there's more of them on the front page now. They come in spurts and there were quite a few the other day, so we'll have to see how it goes.

    Long Ramble:
Regarding Wordpress, I thought of it, but I wanted a permanent home for the site after my ISP took the original blog down due to perf issues - it was impacting other sites on the shared server. After that I decided to go with a blog service that was built to scale and would not take my site down. Blogger owned by Google seemed the natural choice. It's free and if for whatever reason I decide to stop, the resource can live on. I got tired of seeing great synth sites go down on the net because their owners lost interest. If you lose interest there isn't much sense in continuing to pay for it. Not an issue with Blogger. I didn't want that to happen with this site. So... when the day does come, I won't have to worry about paying the dues to keep it running and after I'm long gone, no one else will either. Of course anything can happen to Blogger and Google 100 years from now, but I think it has a better shot at making it here than anywhere else at the moment.

BTW, yes I do think that far out. When I first got into synths and started perusing the web, I primarily went to Sonic State and the other sites around. The Drummachine museum was an awesome resource and now it's gone. Anyway at the time I wondered how much stuff was lost over time and how I wished the web was their to catalog it all in the beginning. That's how and why I ended up starting this site. I had the old Matrixsynth site as basically a portal for me to browse the synth world, but I found the link list was getting out of hand and because they only went to the root of the sites, I sometimes had trouble finding what I was looking for. So I created the blog to capture everything I came across.

I'm hoping people will find it a useful resource not only now, but years from now. That's one of the reasons why I capture all the Ebay shots and sometimes put stuff up that might not be so interesting now - it might be in the future. Also, the images on Ebay are just there for short period of time and then they are lost. Pictures are getting better with digital cameras and I don't want these images to be lost. Someone once posted to the AH mailing list asking for shots of the rear of a particular synth so he could see the jacks. I forget what synth it was, but I had them. I sent him a link to the flickr set and it made his day. They weren't the best shots in regards to something you might want to put in print, but they were the best shots for what he was looking for. It's stuff like that which drives what I put up. I don't put up everything as that would not be humanly possible, but I do put up what I think might be useful and interesting to someone (including myself) one day.

  14. you don't want to see people twiddling thier synths?
you know this matrix synth right?

there are things that bug me too. like circuit bending. it's kind of lame to watch people tear up vintage gear and not get anything that can't be accomplished with a foot pedal.

but i don't want to miss anything either so i don't complain.

i always thought the point of the site was to funnel a lot of synth info into one area. the mount of time that saves is substantial. i don't see what people are complaining about speed for.

  15. "i always thought the point of the site was to funnel a lot of synth info into one area."

That's pretty much it in a nutshell. It's what I and others come across during the day. Anyone can send me anything to post as long as it has to do with synths of course. We all have different tastes.
