Update: Looks like this is actually the Prototype. To start, look at the panel graphics in relation to the pitch and mod wheels vs. the images on the DSI site, then look at the rest.

I am somewhat disapointed in the sound. I have the Poly Evolver and the sound is pretty much the same except you can hear the extra 4 voices in some demos. They are still selling the PEK for 2399.99....So at this point until I can play it in person I would have to go with a Poly Evolver Rack for 1300.00 and use Poly chain so that the PEK as 8 voices. I still very much like the idea of a new prophet 08 but it's sound is the same as the PEK + 4 additional voices. I know the specs are different this is suppose to be full analog signal path and does not have any digital OSC's but compare the sounds of the two...
ReplyDeleteYes, hi, is it really necessary to post that tidbit of information in every Prophet 08 related post?
ReplyDeleteMan, I love the size of it. I've been longing for a small compact poly analog with knobs. I have a Rev 3 Prophet-5 and an Evolver and was waiting for a 6 or 8 voice PEK. I thought I was going to be able to skip this one. Now I'm not so sure... Dammit Dave!
ReplyDeleteno it was not necessary, however after I posted it to the other post, this new post was posted and my comment was more relevent to this post as the two are being compared in size so why not comapre the sound. Did not meen to cause an uproar just wanted to make sure my comments were seen especially in this post so I can hear others comments on the sound. Sorry!
ReplyDeleteMr. Array. Are you serious? When was the last time someone released a true analog synth.
ReplyDelete... and good grief it's Dave Smith! Look him up. He's sorta important to electronic music and MIDI.
Yeah matrix, for sure. I also love the size and the placement of the mod/pitch wheels. This looks like a synth that was made to be portable for those of us that play gigs where size and reliability play a big part in synth choices. Kudos to Dave, this looks to be truly a gigging players synth!
ReplyDeleteAnon- I was referring to the post which ends with "I know the specs are different this is suppose to be full analog signal path and does not have any digital OSC's but compare the sounds of the two..."
ReplyDeleteThe PEK is so much sexier.
ReplyDeleteMine's bigger.
ReplyDeleteBut do you know how to use it?
ReplyDeleteProbably not.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a P-600 next to the PEK =o]

ReplyDeleteI was also very happy to see an all analog poly come out on the market. However, I must admit I got a case of blue balls when I found out they're DCO's. Is it just not possible to have VCO's these days?
ReplyDeletelooks like a more serious pice of kit than the blueberry flavoured PEK. I'll be promptly placing my order!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same. It looks like Prophet 600. Btw doesn't both PEK and P 08 have digitally controlled analog oscillators? So P 08 is just four analog oscs more without digital oscs.
ReplyDeleteBefore this it was sure i buy PEK but not anymore. Prophet seems to be very tempting alternative.
ReplyDeleteThat P'08 must be a prototype: the images available at the DSI website show a slightly different (and less cramped) layout.
ReplyDeleteThe size difference between the two synths is interesting.
