Sal Mar Performances

YouTubes via ZanterM

"I took this video in April of 2004 at "New Directions in the Study of Musical Improvsation: An Interdisciplinary and Intercultural Conference" hosted by the UIUC Musicology division. It features David Rosenboom, dean CAL Arts [Music School], playing the SAL MAR for the first time in 20 years ; the culmination of the efforts to revive this amazing instrument! Viva la Sal! Viva la SAL MAR! MZ"

  1. Wow, I was just reading about the Sal Mar in that green hardcover electronic music book. It does in the audio realm what Joel Chadabe's "Daisy" did as a sequencer. Chadabe refers to it as "quasi-random," where certain steps of the user-specified sequence are randomized on the bit level.

See also the "Klee" sequencer on the diy boards.

It looks a lot like the telephone junction box down the hall from our studio.

  2. Heeeeey...

I know that guy! David Rosenboom is the Dean of the Music School, btw...not 'the Dean of CalArts' as mentioned in this post. There is no overall dean, the closest to that would be the provost Nancy Uscher or the President, Steven Lavine.

In any event, if anyone could perform an interesting improv piece, David is the composer for the job. He's got much experience with this and an uncanny sense for the balance of predicability v. quality of information.

  5. I got stereo Sal Mar's on Craigslist.

You really need Stereo Sal Mar's, or your not a player.

I hear Alesis is going to release 16 Sal Mar's on VLSI this fall.
