Hugo Törntorp playing the Yamaha GX-1

YouTube via RothHandle.

"A short film of Hugo Törntorp playing Benny Anderssons Yamaha GX-1. This keyboard was used by Abba at the Polar studios but also by Led Zeppelin on in through the outdoor. The GX-1 is one of the rarest keyboards in the world and was used by bands such as Elp, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder and Hans Zimmer. Hugo Törntorp is/was a member of sweish popband Celestine. The band has recorded one album called between bedtime and sunrise produced by Mattias Olsson. Roth Händle studio is the home of one of the worlds biggest and oddest collections of vintage keyboards, drum machines and effects. 1. That GX1 was,as i understand it,given to him for free as a long term loan. Gotta love that.A free GX1.

In my alternate universe the phone call went something like this.

    **Ring**
    RH:Roth Händle Studios.
BA: Hi this is Benny Andersson from ABBA.
    RH:**Yawn**What do you want ?
BA: You know my old GX1?
    RH: Yeah,what about it?
BA:Well i'm not using it and seeing you're into old synths i thought i'd loan it to you for an indefinite time.
    RH: A GX1? I dunno man.
BA: Ahh C'mon. It was used by Led Zeppelin you know.
RH:If you're going to be all naggy about it,i guess i could just take to get you off my back if nothing else.
BA:Ahh cool.I'll bring it over then.
    RH:You do that.
    BA: Fine.See ya later.
    RH. **Click**

Disclaimer:This conversation most likely never took part but in my alternate universe it did.

  2. for what it's worth the sound of those CS-80's pisses all over the GX-1's sound in these videos. The GX-1 sounds like a weezy schizoid organ. The CS-80's sound like one of the best analog polysynths of all time.

    Dave: Buh
BA: Hi this is Benny Andersson from ABBA.
    Dave: Buh?
BA: Uh, right. Well, ABBA has decided to come out of retirement. I've already reclaimed my old Yamaha GX-1 that, until now, had been on permanent loan.
Dave: You've got a funny accent
BA: Yes, I know. Anyway, I broke both my hands recently, because frankly I was touching myself a bit too strenuously after watching all of your synth demos and reading your incredibly well-informed posts on Matrixsynth...
    Dave: TMI Benny
BA: Sorry... anyway, I was hoping you could sit in on the new album by recording the synth parts in your usual masterful style.... we would of course compensate you with the GX afterwards for all your trouble.....

    **cloud bubble bursts**

Dave: SNARK!! Oh, it was all a dream... uh oh my hands are broken now

  5. See, this is what I love about this blog. Someone who actually owns a GX-1 is reading my posts.

That's almost like owning one! OK, so it isn't at all like that, actually.
