That's mandatory for equipment made under the ROHS specifications.
ReplyDeleteWe have to put this bin in every electronic board we make!

ReplyDeleteWhat this sticker means is when you're done with this, don't throw it away - send it to the manufacturer to do that.
ReplyDeleteFurther, it's the manufacturer's repsonsibility to dispose of the raw materials the device is made of (meaning recycle them via approved methods and to applicable recycling facilities) once the owners(s) decide it's to be thrown away, if ever. People who make diamond rings probably don't have to worry about this happening too often. People who make computer keyboards and DVD players and a billion other types of products that fit that reliability profile do and it's my understanding that the process of separating the materials, bailing them, accounting for and disposing them is done totally at the manufacturer's expense.
IMHO, it's a good idea in theory, but it's execution is dreadful. As if this date, you all will do this, if not, you'll pay a hefty penalty...so the monkey was put on the manufacturers backs and they are faced with dealing with everything, even if their product is made from purchased parts that they had no part deciding the composition and/or ecological tolarances.

Even my Clavia Nord Stage 88 has (had) this sticker...
ReplyDeleteAt least here in America, you are not supposed to trash TVs or old computer equipment either. You are supposed to give them to a recycling facility who strips the viable parts and sends the obsolete parts to China. Over there the plastics get burned or melted away with acid and the metals get recycled, all without any environmental regulation or worker safety. A very "not in my backyard" or "out of sight, out of mind" type of system.
