Alicia Keys and the Jupiter-8 - VMA Awards

My wife is watching the VMA awards (I'll never admit to it : ). Anyway Alicia Keys just played and get this, she had a Roland Jupiter-8 out on the catwalk. She performed and walked over to it and played a few notes. If anyone has a screen shot of this or sees it on YouTube, post back and I'll update the post up. Not much happens with it, but it was nice seeing something vintage there. There were some nice close-ups of it.

Update: image and link to the video via the comments.

  1. Wow, so her producer said "This will give her some street cred with synth nerds" and put that out there. She most likely did not give a shit about the synth and probably thought "Wow, this KORG Triton is so old it doesn't have a screen!" and probably only played a few notes because the acoustic piano preset didn't sound real. >_>

I hate hearing about dumb celebrities with synthesizers though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

  2. Yeah, I'm sure her producer wanted her to get a post on Matrixsynth. ;)

  3. i didn't watch. but after reading about this, for some unknown reason it annoys me. i don't really know her music, does she use synths a lot? or is this just for show?

  4. next we'll see butterscotch spitting banana on an 808

i hate alicia keys. she does her hair and dresses in a way that she won't move. some people sleep with thier head haning off the bed so thier hair stays nice but you're supposed to act normal when people are watching...a lot of people...you can buy more hair in two minuits b!tch move!

she plays psuedo classical intros to her meager songs. she plays piano can you believe it?

she didn't touch it too much did she?

  6. Wow, lot of haters here. Alicia Keys came out at a time when the vast majority of pop music was complete shit, but she brought something soulful and musical to the scene. Maybe not your style, but she is intelligent, and a great pianist. This is a woman who grew up playing Chopin. I can't say what she's up to now, but if a pianist wants to dabble in vintage synths, what's wrong with that? Let artists be artists.

Now if it were Fergie doing that, I'd be right there slinging mud with the rest of you :-)

  7. It's worth noting she was one of the few who actually played live. No lip singing and the Jupiter-8 did work, albeit just for the brief part. It was cool seeing it.

  8. Alicia Keys is not my kind of music, but she is at least a very good singer and she can actually play the keys. MTV is so bad it's kind of shocking when an actual musician performs. You never know, she might be a synth nerd. I wouldn't bet one way or the other.

  9. so what do you guys have to say about the Jupiter-6 in every episode of Totally Frank?

  10. I think it is wrong to assume she doesn't know anything about synths...she's probably been in some very geek worthy studios and since SHE CAN PLAY, I'm sure she has played many. Not everyone who chooses to be in mainstream music is a complete fool.

  11. If Dylan likes Alicia Keys, she's alright w/ me.

Definitely agreed on the "if this was Fergie, it's mudslinging time" comment though.

  14. Not sure this bothers a comment, but I has "hobnobbing" with a few other local CT keyboardists over the weekend, and met the guy who sold this Jupe to Alicia (via eBay, of course). He's in a Bon Jovi tribute band.

All in all, a weird, pointless anecdote.

  15. Yea what's with the mad hatin'?

I thought the song was very nice, and you could tell that she was singing and playing. The Jup 8 sounded awesome, and i frankly don't care how much she uses it. That is probably the first time since like 1985 that a Roland Jupiter Anything was seen on a MTV stage.

    ReplyDelete
  16. So then it was most likely her idea to use it on stage?

  17. and she owns a studio people

  18. Erasure, Duran Duran, Howard Jones and few other 80's synth pop-ists have been caught dragging their beloved 80's synths on stage with their re-vival tours.

To say that you ain't seen JP-8 on stage since 80's and watching a fraction of a second of this abomination performed by Alicia Keys is your excuse for JP-8 hunger? It's an insult to all the search engines and discerning ears everywhere.

Here's some real musicians using JP-8 as it was intended (most of these are quite recent too):

Not somebody well known, but wickedly cool synth video (with other syths in for bonus):

Duran Duran was using JP-8 (alongside with Andromeda) on their 2005 tour.

anyway, I'm not quite ready to part with mine just yet but who knows... maybe some day in the future.

  19. Too many haters. It was a Jupe. It was short. But it was cool. Nuff said.

    Keys is alright by me.

  20. "lip singing"???

probably just a typo, but should be:

    "lip syncing"

  24. Haha, I always love to read the comments on this blog posted by all the jealous wanks. So whats wrong with Alicia? I bet she could play better than 99.9% of the people who read this blog.

Sheer hatred lust and envy is what I see here. Some of you need to get a life and quit the internet hating. There is a whole world outside of your mothers basement, you know. Why not go enjoy it onstead of brooding about everything?

  25. play yes write no.

so we made fun of her. it makes no difference. it could be argued that she hasn't impacted culture at all. she'll slip away having made a few bucks. just as boring as ever. your grand kids will know the words to dick in a box but you'll have to tell them about alicia keys. they'll seem very distracted if they even listen.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't know about that, she's been around for a while now and doesn;t seem to be going anywhere.

  27. 1. i cant believe i bothered to read what you insignificant losers wrote all the way to the end of the thread.

    2. i cant believe that someone else said EXACTLY what i was going to say, which is:

"Haha, I always love to read the comments on this blog posted by all the jealous wanks. So whats wrong with Alicia? I bet she could play better than 99.9% of the people who read this blog.

right down to the comment about your mothers basement. dude, whoever you are who wrote that, you and i must be long lost twins. to the haters, GET A FUCKING LIFE, YOU DOUCHEBAG LOSERS. its sad that the only way you can get anyone to listen to you is here on matrixsynth. learn some manners and make something - anything - of yourselves and maybe youll get rid of your misdirected hatred.
