This isn't necessary 'the poly-mod' but rather, what the poly-mod makes up for on the p5, and that is the lack of a third oscillator. The p08 has 20 oscillators, 16 for audio and 4 LFOs for modulation. And whats very important is that the LFOs can go audio rate and have a pethora of routing destinations. Having the 3rd EG is also a great addition as well. And then on top of that, you also have your 'modulators' section where you can actually modulate an LFO with an LFO (even the LFO section allows for this too).

you can also listen to some very short samples which feature these sections and some of their more familiar modulation routings. There is quite a bit of possibilities and you'll just need to play around with one for yourself. My goal was to show some of the more 'prophet-esque' sounds.
They're not meant to sound pretty .. but to some people might find them lovely. If you want pretty, listen to Behind The Mask ;-)

Also some details about how they were setup. I started off each time with a basic patch (Program Yes).
You still can't do OSC to OSC FM which creates some great sounds. That's different than just an LFO that goes into audio rates.
ReplyDeleteno difference between using an lfo that goes into audio rates to fm an oscillator and using an audio oscillator to fm another audio oscillator.
ReplyDeleteActually, there are some differences, depending on the actual design.
ReplyDeleteIf the LFOs can't track the keyboard, the FM is not "playable". Also, if they are digital, LFO waveshapes are generally of less quality (does the Prophet '08 use analog LFOs?) than regular audio oscs, so you get a bit rougher sound when running these less optimised waveshapes at audio freq mod rates.

ReplyDeleteI've never seen someone be so passive-agressive when it comes to oscillators and LFOs. You must be one of those "synth nerds" people keep talking about.
ReplyDeleteThanks John! In the 'modulators' section you can specify the keyboard with a destination of an LFO, so there are some possibilities there. However, it is probably not possible to track the LFO via the keyboard. There are a lot of source/destination choices in the 'modulators' section that could probably use some sort of graph tree to represent all the possibilities.

I guess 'anonymous' is just expecting this to be a clone of a Prophet-5. I did not expect it to be at all.
I expected if your going to come out with a synth in 2007 and call it a "Prophet-08" it better damn well at least have the features the Prophet-5 had in 1978.

Anyway, the two machines share only a very 'big' name and a very clever and good designer!

ReplyDeleteI think that the P8 sounds very good, but why call it a 'Prophet' if it doesn't have a polymod section as good as the original P5 or the P600/T8 for that matter! Yes the additional modulation sources are very cool, but these are low frequency control sources for the most part. The beauty of the P5 polymod is that it enabled the user to create unconventional waveforms with it's FM capabilities, giving the user a much wider range of waveforms as building blocks than other poly synths at the time. I don't think this is nit picking. There is such a wide range of polysynths out there, new, old, and virtual. If you're going to introduce yet another polysynth it should have features which stand out from the rest of the crowd. The P5 did stand out at the time and it sounded amazing, the P8 doesn't take enough advantage of what analog is capable of such as the Andromeda and Jomox SunSyn for example.
ReplyDeletedon't waste your money on the dsi prophet '08. get a creamware pro-12 asb. it deserves the prophet name more than the dsi.
