  1. how many seconds can it sample?

  2. I don't understand the question. It samples voltage levels

  3. What are the two rate knobs for?

    ReplyDelete
  4. how many seconds? what do you mean by that exactly? are you asking about the range of the internal clock?

  5. "how many seconds can it sample?"

If I were nearly Sid Vicious I'd clobber you with my Syntar. Its not a digital sampler Mr. Meh.. sorry... try the thrift store for a ÜberKühl Casio cRapmeister 5000. ;-)

  6. He's asking how many seconds of audio as in digital audio sampler.

  7. What waveform is the internal oscillator?

  8. George -

    A note from a colleague:

The Matrixsynth blog and the Analogue Haven mail list are tough audiences. If I took to heart a 1/16th if the comments I receive I'd pack it in. I don't, so I haven't. You would think everyone would be thankful for your hard work to put together a tool for them to make new music with, wouldn't ya? It's a fair assessment but unfortunately it doesn't always work that way. Just know for every troll there are ten times that number of generally excited individuals.

Congrats on the system, look forward to seeing it, I'm sure it'll be great, walk tall...you get the idea.

    welome!

  9. Its own osc built in? Does the jack override it for external source material like noise?
What waveform is the built-in osc?

    Its also a track-and-hold?

    Things are looking interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Outputs for the internal osc (triangle? saw?) and clock (square, no doubt) would be a great use for two more jacks. Two LFOs, just waiting to be set free. :-)

I would like to suggest a more general label for the "Ext. Osc. In" jack, like "Signal Input".

Built in lag is a nice touch.

Can't wait to learn what Track mode is! Not a common feature.

  11. i hereby declare than "meh" means " i am an idiot who thinks he/she is better and smarter than everyone else only because of my ability to instantly disregard anything i'm too lazy or stupid to understand" please let the internet know - King Of All Time And Space

  12. Track vs. sample:

...controls the gate time of the signal triggering the sample in an S+H circuit. It's explained in some detail (there's a diagram) on the Plan B model 23 page.

If the pulse that trigger the cap to charge is short (real short), it works like a sample and hold. If that pulse is long, the S+H will allow the cap to pass the signal through in reatime for as long as that pulse is held high....just like a keyboard. When the key is pressed, the voltages pass in real time. When it's released, the last voltage is held until another pulse (key depression) happens.

a sample and hold circuit modulated the gate time to fraction of seconds. A Track and Hold skips this and let's the unprocessed gate pass through to the sampling cap.

    hope that helps.

at what point does the name change?

  14. Nice to see you here, Peter, thanks for the explanation. I did know what Track mode does but I forgot somewhere along the way. ;) The explanation will be useful to others, so I'm not too embarassed. Oh, yeah, I'm anonymous. Heh.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I see Peter described the difference between Sample and Track modes. Thanks, Peter. You can probably type faster than I can. I also e-mailed you. I hope the old e-mail is still working.

The internal oscillator is a fixed triangle waveform capable of a range of .01 to 5.01 seconds. If you want something else, The external oscillator in jack overrides it.

The sample oscillator is square wave based with the same range.

The sample oscillator triggers the sample strobe gate on the positive waveform transition.

The external clock in will override the square wave allowing the sample strobe to grab whatever is there to sample when it goes from anywhere around 0 to around 5 volts or higher.

    The sample strobe is 1mS.

It's a real hoot to put it in Track and hold and throw a non-symmetrical waveform into the external trigger.

It's not predictable but, it sounds cool.

Technically, if you need to use it as an LFO in a pinch, just crank the clock rate up and use the sampled output. The sample rate is so fast your ears can't tell the difference.

  16. oh cool so its a analog multi track sampling module. can't wait to see the cassette interface.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'd enjoy adding an S/H with the Track feature to my setup.

And George, I strongly second what Peter said- There are an infinite amount of 13-year-olds on their mother's computers these days, posting to the internet.

And, many adults who are impossible to differentiate from the aforementioned 13-year-olds.

Completely ignore anything that feels like a troll. Don't waste any time on them (make more gear instead).

Glad to have you making something that will be easier to find than the Syntar, and welcome from those of us who are serious. I look forward to seeing your entire system, and congratulate you for having this much ready to go all at once.

    -Mike

  18. You know maybe the people offering criticism aren't just trolls but pointing out the realities of the market. Stack this up against a Doepfer or AS system for the same price and it looks pretty pathetic. Doing proper market research before launching a new business is usually a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I know that. I also know that they have a need to vent, I personally don't understand the reason. But, if they must, maybe it validates something for them.

I was watching the onslaught when Peter announced PlanB and he mentioned he was busy. I knew what he meant and "busy" is a pretty inaccurate word to describe it. So, I felt for him. I've been there before.

Thanks to all of you for your kind comments and support.

    The DLFO will be next

    George

  20. I second what Peter and Mike said. Like I said before in the other thread, most of the trollish posts here (like Mike also pointed out)are made by kids on their mommies computer who live in their mommies house and have no jobs, no money, and no intentions of even buying the products. They just like to make negative posts in every thread. Pay it no mind. I can assure you that there are a lot of us who are indeed very interested in this.

    ReplyDelete
  21. As far as market research. I know the whole story here.

Plus, I'm not new at this.

    Thanks for your concern.

  22. Dear Mother of Matrix Synth. Please modify the "comments" section to require
signed-in users only. That might temper the mentally and emotionally hampered (meh) posters and make this new MMM thing civilized again. Peace and Voltage to All.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ideas and constructive criticism are helpful and generally appreciated. Some posts are obviously designed to make people angry or start flame wars and offer nothing helpful. Those are the "troll" comments we can do without.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Could a DIY person bring the internal signals out? Do the internal LFOs have 0-5V signals? Thanks in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  25. i agree with peter, but ill say it less politely: the trolls here and on analogue heaven arent a complete waste of life. (yeah, you know who you are). theyve got nothing positive to say because theyre angry people lacking anything that remotely resembles positive qualities let alone social skills. they just want to suck everyone else into their pathetic miserable world. isnt it great they use AH and MS as their personal toilets?

death to all the haters. you people suck. and so do your mommies for not teaching you basic human manners.

    ReplyDelete
  26. At least on the AH list you can see who the trolls are, here they have complete anonymity.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I still can't understand the need for yet another module format. Why couldn't these designs have been built into panels that would fit one of the many module standards out there already?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I second the call to require login for comments. I think it's great to see all these boutique synth developers, and for them to submit to the pointless abuse of internet trolls is really uncalled for. If you've got something real to say, take the trouble to create an account, otherwise, bug off.

  29. Anominity is a good thing IMHO. I've seen more posts about this BS then the actual BS. Deal damnit and STFUA. By the way, I live in my Mom's basement, I want one of these things and even if its cheap I may have to still save up for it and be inducted into the elite butthole club of modular addicts. George is gona have to get use to it I think if not already. "How many seconds can it sample?" - that was pure awesomeness!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Is there a webby for these yet? Or am I just blind and not seeing it??

    ReplyDelete
  31. Are these meant to fit into quad boxes?
If so, what a great idea!
And fwiw, the best way to react to trolls is not to.

    ReplyDelete
  32. not one nasty comment about the leds. hard to believe with this crowd.

with the functions already present on this module, you could add a couple more jacks and a switch ala the 2600 - a very useful feature

by the way, don't dump the anon/other i enjoy using one lame name after another. don't take away the only joy in my life :-0

    ReplyDelete
  33. Will this thing make banjo sounds?

    ;-P

Matrix had the anon-or-not debate a long time ago and decided to keep them (obviously). Good.

WRT price, Doepfer and ASol will be hurt by the weak US dollar. And George may find a good overseas market. 800 pounds is a good deal, ain't it?

    ReplyDelete
  34. ""How many seconds can it sample?" - that was pure awesomeness!"

Haha, I agree. If we lose the anonimity, we will lose priceless comments like that. "how many seconds can it sample?" LOL!!! Haha, I'm still laughing about that one, classic.

  38. Same thing happened to the DSI P8 when it came out - all the trolls and detractors came out then the Defenders of the Faith telling them, "if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing." What no one puts in perspective is Dave Smith and George are businessmen hawking a produkt, not Mother Frikin Theresa helping the homeless. You wanna take our money, take our s**t. I'm more sick of the "think good thoughts or we'll wish you into the cornfield" mentality. What else but a little yelp as more Produkt is shoved down out throats.

    ReplyDelete
  39. the question is: at what point does sample and hold become track and hold?

While stating a finite gate duration threshold would be the easy answer, the real one (IMHO) is when it's long enough where you can detect the wobble of the incoming voltage between held samples. Somewhere around 10 to 20ms is my experience.

    ReplyDelete
  40. ...analog & modular synths are a very limited market..the guys who build these things do it because they love this sh#t, especially the smaller companies that may only employ a few people. Trying to imply that their looking to get rich off this stuff is very jaded and far from the truth, possibly even paranoid. Belive me if this thing sounds like ass, ill be quick to give it a ...meh..we should at least wait until we hear & see the whole thing before going MEHnTAL.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh the joy of reading what has been posted so far!!! I found out what I wanted to know and even some stuff that I didn't know I wanted to know but am now glad that I know it. Uhoh, I found a nit that I must pick: the one thing that I would do differently would be to change the "Ext. Osc. In" on the overlay to "Ext. Sig. In" I got confused just looking at the picture and reading the short troll posts.

George, Thank you for doing this. You have contributed greatly towards curing me on my 1/8" jack phobia.

One last thing, From what I've read you're from the Northwest. Is there any chance that you'll be at this year's Pacific Northwest Synth Meet on the 29th and show off at least a basic system? Please.

    James

  43. Hehe, these modules are like crack. I keep checking back to see if the next one has been revealed yet!

    ReplyDelete
  44. George is a cruel man for stringing this out for over the course of the week. In this age of instant gratification, he should know that this will only serve to make the natives restless. So on behalf of all the natives, trolls and meh-th heads, I implore you to reveal all now, before Matrix declares martial law on us, the unworthy, the lowly anonymous posters.

    ReplyDelete
  45. The modules will fit in the plastic electrical boxes made for light switches and wall sockets which are cheap and available at places like Home Depot.

    ReplyDelete
  46. LOL,

Remember, I've been posting anonymously too! I just sign my name. I don't have a blogger account. :)

    George Mattson

  47. im not gonna sign up for an account, but im not a troublemaker. im the guy who points out what assholes these trolls can be. i think i know who most of them are too, and if they dont STFU im going to reveal their identities right here, before your very eyes, so nobody will ever want to deal with them. dont waste my time, you insignificant turds. f u and your mommas too.
