  1. does the tag on the back mean that there were 137 total devil fish mods by october 2002 or just of version 2.1c? either people really like to show them off or there are a lot of them which is it?

  2. the serial number is the running tally - from #1 to current (regadless of version). I think there's just shy of 200 out there.

  3. And the nice high starting bid is sure to scare any potential bidders away!

  4. i don't know how the mod affects the price usually. i prefer standard but i'm not against it. it's nicely refurbished and deffinetly took some work. that adds value. the added controls are a little busy and look a tad radio shack. it's hard to think of a fair value for it.

  5. Devilfish adds value for sure, but this guy's prices are always outrageous.

  6. i left out the poularity aspect in my last post did that just snowball from ritchie hawtin or is it part of other respected custom work?

  7. robin whittle modded instruments are highly sought after.

  8. Popular or not, it's still way out of line. The mods don't add over $1000 of value. He's just hoping some schmuck will be desperate enough to buy.

  9. Guys...this mod including everything costs AU$2000 + shipping it there, almost the same in US$. It transforms the TB into something far beyond the strictly limited thing a 303 really is. With the original sound a tweak or two away. It's probably the best made mod for ANY synth and imagine that with a 303... and you got sounds from another planet, worth every cent.
My TB is comming home to Sweden in a few weeks :D

  10. A friend of mine had a Devilfish, although it did do some cool sounds we found ourselves going back to the standard 303 sound or a slight variation of it, also it does look very homebrew. For the price of the mod you could buy a 777 and say a 101 and have a much more flexible setup.

I can't imagine that the components cost more than $100 - $200 so you are paying an awful lot for the work, which seems a bit excessive.
Robin Whittle is the master of hype though and the webpage certainly draws you in, but sadly the mods do not live up to the hype.

A lot of people see it as the holy grail but I can't think of any records where I can say "thats a devilfish" In the end my friend sold it and later got a standard 303.

If anything I think in the longterm a lot of these mods like the Borg, Devilfish etc will devalue a 303, its kind of silly to buy a 303 and want to change it into something else, just get something else in the first place. The thing with a 303 is it is the only machine that sounds like a 303, so why change it?

There is a guy doing some extreme mods for the x0xb0x, a cheaper and better alternative than butchering a 303.

  12. LOL!

    Compairing a 777 to a devilfish...

Going back from DEvilfish to regular 303...

    LOL!

    "I can't imagine that the components cost more than $100 - $200"

    Get a clue...

  13. get a clue is bad form. alterations to vintage equipment will always be questioned by collectors and purists. and even people who just want the 303 sound. maybe you plunked down a good bit of cash on a devil fish but that can only be a self-fulfilling venture. don't get sour with people who see less.

  14. I think the guy was on acid when he came up with the price.

  15. Wow, $2800?!?!?!

I know someone makes this comment every time there is a 303 post, but remember before the 303 revival when you could walk into almost any pawn shop in the US and find a 303 for $50 or less?

  16. Getting the mod done does NOT cost $2000. Where did you come up with that figure?

  17. when i became aware of roland gear specific to techno, a lot of the party kids (non producers) were snapping them up and selling them to people in germany. they viewed it the same as drugs, a way to multiply thier money. internet hype has always been taken advantage of. if people had patience they could have walked into the pawn shop and said the 303 didn't work right themselves. haggle people! don't set crazy standards for others!

it won't change things but i had to put it out there.
