oh no!!! what happened to the cool orange/black graphics? I was really looking forward to that.

ReplyDeleteLooks like this is the answer to everyone who wanted a Frostwave Sonic Alienator in modular format. Looks cool. How does it compare to the Alienator? Basically the same sound minus the LPF?

ReplyDeleteEh... I heard that there will be a pretty big increase in the price (like well over 25%) now that the retailers are going to be distributing it. Oh well, its still a cool module. I liked the old layout better though.
ReplyDeleteThe orange/black panel graphics were possible with Harvestman prototypes due to the engraving process used by Front Panel Express. Due to the high cost and long turnaround time of that facility, a different solution is necessary for producing large numbers of these modules.
ReplyDeleteI investigated having a nice screen-printed design in black/orange as you could see on the site, but the cost was very high and the printing would not be very durable compared to the photographic metal many manufacturers use these days. I do like the appearance of the powdercoated/screened Cwejman modules (for example), but in my personal live setup where the modules are mounted parallel to the table they often incur some scratches due to flying cables. Other modules in that case making use of photo metal look just like new. The corrosion resistance is nice, too.
So, in adapting the panel graphic concepts to simple black/silver graphics I decided to explore some ergonomic practicalities: the design is optimized for live performance in low-light environments. High panel contrast, knobs of differing sizes according to function (those arrive here tomorrow, and I'll take some pictures), and groupings of functions that aren't aligned to a strict grid. In my experience performing with small-format modular synthesizers I tend to play them by touch more than anything else.
I've never used a Sonic Alienator before, but I imagine the swap/warp settings are similar to some of the Malgorithm's Volvulus modes. Audio-rate modulation of sampling rate is pretty special-sounding.
These modules (knobs and all) ship to Analogue Haven at the end of the week.

ReplyDeleteA price increase would be inevitable, I guess. I mean, Analogue haven has to mark it up so they will make money, right? They don't do charity work. Although it would be nice if we could still purchase them direct from harvestman for cheaper if we choose.
