Roland GR-700 Guitar Synth

YouTube via Analogger.
"I've been meaning to do this for awhile. I scrolled thru some of the factory presets. I'm not really a guitar player but I got the GR-700 to do ambient textures and fat pads, etc. The GR-700 has the same synth engine as the JX-3P but has a more "organic" sound because each string can send pitch bend so you can get a really nice slight de-tuning. Two digitally controlled oscillators per string and a fat 24db analog filter. I used the G-707 guitar controller. The only effect was some dealy from an Alesis Quadraverb."

  1. Thanks for this great demo! I always wanted a 700 but have yet to find one. I love my GR-300 & GR-100 boxes. Sadly my GR-500 brain was stolen.

One thing I don't like about the new GK pick up based Roland Guitar Synths is that I can't control the cut-off frequency from a knob ON the guitar. That became second nature with the GR-300.

  4. I remember clearly when the GR-700 came out that there was great anticipation followed by some disappointment.

The main complaints about the GR-700 were it tracked slower that the GR-300 and it quickly got the reputation that the unit's housing was "less solid" or roadworthy than the metal blue box of the GR-300. I remember when it came out it quickly earned the name "The Christmas Toy" by those I knew who played GR-300s. I still know people of a certain age who call it that.

I often think Roland is STILL mistakenly trying to still trying to market the notion of the guitar synth to guitarists who would never use one instead of those musicians who would.

  5. I had a GR-700. It tracked really bad. Had the courage of playing at a live gig with it at a Calgary Jazz Festival during the mid 90s, boldly connecting a Roland Sound Canvas via midi to it. It was the show of glitches. After this gig it collected dust for a long time. Tried to sell it, nobody wanted to buy it. I ended up donating it to the Cantos Music Foundation.
