Synclavier maybe?
ReplyDelete'cept the Synclavier, like the first Fairlights, was first and foremost, a synthesizer. Only with the later models (3200 and 9600 systems) did the Synclavier really come into its own as a high-end sampler (along with Fairlight's series III and MFX).
ReplyDeleteThe Sync's FM synthesis, at that point, became more of an secondary feature, and was an option.
I forgot to add that, initally - the Sync was ONLY a synth. The reason the Fairlight is probably featured in this (albeit small) Sonic State feature, is that even in its initial release, it could sample.

MPC-2000
MPC-3000
If the ranking were about the most popular sampler, then Akai would grab the top spot hands down. But here, it is the greatest... MPC-60 or 3000 might be there but I would rather see an ASR-X or a Kurwzeil K2000

ReplyDeleteXavier, I'm with you on the K2000, but I think most people consider the Kurzweil K synths to be ROMpler synths first and foremost, then samplers as an added bonus.
ReplyDeleteIf it was a question of most popular sampler, the Casio SK-1 wins hands down. :D
