  1. I am doing a Buchla compilation entitled "Music for trust fund babies" -- I'd love to include some of your jams on it.

  2. cool sounds.. love that chaotic stuff.

ALL the modules that ship from B&A are from Dons own system.. he really doesn't have such a thing when it comes to a production instrument.

by the way Doc not all Buchla owners are rich..some of us just spend more time working rather then talking shit on internet blogs..

maybe try this and buy yourself a
    200e ;)

  5. i know the buchlar looks amazing and it is mega gear lust, hell id love it, but to just dont find its sound to my taste, it sounds too digital, almost like a cross between a access virus and a circuit bent toy..

im sorry i love don and what he has done.

  7. Oh I know not every Buchla owner is rich. But it'd be fun to make such a fun-titled compilation :)

  8. I think its safe to say:

    1) we love the gear

    2) we love the maker

    3) we love the postings

    4) we love what can be done with the gear

    5) but we don't always love what is done with the gear

    :-)

  9. Someone really needs to convince Behringer to do a Chinese mass-produced ripoff of the music easel for $200...

    I'm serious.

  10. The Buchla stuff is obviously expensive, but I've always thought that as well as getting an amazing modular synth, if you bought one it'd also be a good investment "cmoney wise". Once Don stops making these things I'm sure their price will only go up. I know in a way it's a horrible viewpoint to ponder, losing or gaining money on buying synths, but right now I'd see it as a better investment than some stocks and shares at the moment. :)

  12. Yep we are all lucky that Don builds instruments and even more lucky that he is willing to share them with us.

did you just get the 3 modules? the 291 Filter is pretty amazing, you should conisder adding that when you can.

jesus..the guy that suggested Behringer clone the Easel should be castrated so he can't infect the world with his seed... some people just don't get it.

Actually, I do get it... but I get the egalitarian side of modular synths more than the elitist, exclusionary side. Hence my DIY/PAIA/Blacet/CGS modular. Serge Tcherepnin got it too... at least at first, in theory. He was initially interested in building inexpensive, powerful modules and breaking free from the "political hierarchy that had control over getting into" the Buchla studios at Cal. Inst. Arts. He set up a "build your own" club where people put up $700 for parts and got together and built synths over a few months. Seems like blatant communism compared to Buchla's business model, which targets elite MFA's and loaded-composers. Of course, Serge's are by no means cheap these days, but I appreciate the original intent even if it's masked behind a $3000 price tag.

Seriously - I want to see a cheap knockoff of a $15,000 noise-toy in the hands of the unwashed masses for $200 each.

  14. I added a vintage 259 and a new 261e to my Eurorack setup and now I can pretty much make any sound (banjo included) a Buchla 200e can. Mostly with Plan-B and other's stuff, you can get most of the randomizers, VCA vactrol gates, sequencers and filters to make the same 200e approximate. A Model 15's Morph Output and an A-137 Wave Mult can do a good 259. A few new Oscillaters yet to appear will prob outdo a 261e as well.

I was intimidated by the complexity and price tag until I analyzed what was really going on. Buchla doesn't have to be an all or nothing option.

  15. gerald, you make it sound like you think Don is trying to keep his instruments priced out of the reach of musicians. I had a conversation with Don about this regarding the 200e and I promise you he wants people (everyone) to have access to his synths.

The development costs however are so large that he can't afford to sell them for any less as he is only making a very small profit as it is. B&A is a small company, not yamaha or roland etc.

As far as the vintage market is concerned.. sure Music Easels are not cheap these days but like anything old and rare they are collectables as well as musical instruments. Unless there is something specfic about the easel that you can't recreate with another system then why bother lusting for one and complaining about the price.

To me, suggesting Behringer make a cheap knock off of something that was designed to a certain degree of quality is insulting to a man trying to make a living developing new instruments.

what you obviously are NOT getting is that buchlas are about developing new and interesting concepts in music and musical instrument interaction and design and creating a crappy knock off is not innovation or even flattering immitation.
