A great alternative is the AVR Synth from Jarek Ziembicki http://www.jarek-synth.strona.pl/ which you can buy as a kit from elby designs. It becomes a pretty powerful unit with Daniel Krue's mods: http://krue.net/avrsyn/

It's not an alternative.
ReplyDeleteThe sound it's not the same.
The avr-x have 256 forms of waves and 2 waveshapers with 15 waveforms.
I've built your avr and it's very thin, very limited on sound, and the filter it's like not working, you have to turn it on maximum to react.

ReplyDeleteThe AVR-X is a lot better, no doubt, it has an analog filter IIRC and many wave forms to select, but it is also a lot more complex to build. I would not recommend the AVR-X for a DIY starter, as I do recommend the AVR Synth from Jarek to anyone new to DIY electronics.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the thin filter, did you get to try Krue's mods for the AVRSynth? There is a huge improvement in the filter there.
I've built the avr in the same box with soundlab, and run the avr into the soundlab filter.
ReplyDeleteThat is a good idea. With a simple SW/HW modification you could send gate signals out of the AVR. hmmm, actually You could get a trigger output from the AVR MIDI LED.
ReplyDeleteI have midi to cv converter for sound lab, and i can setup avr and soundlab
ReplyDeletewith the same midi adress or different adresses.
