Buchla

via christian mirande

"here's a picture of a buchla 500 that i've never seen posted before. it's most buchla 200 stuff, that 500 series keyboard controller, and the 300 series patchbay (same as in ciani's) and osc bank (i think, i forget what david told me it was, it's in his 300 too). got it from the buchla 700 group. there's some other shots there too.

top: 281, 292, 227, 207, 257
middle: #, 296, %, 266, 285, 230
proprietary 500 keyboard controller

# - 500/300 series wavetable osc right? i forget, corrections?
% - 500/300 series patchbay, for get the numbers, similar two the 228-2 (228-1?) or the strips; used in Ciani's 300

Here's a link to a set i played with easel player charles cohen if your interested. i've been trying to get him to do some sound samples or youtube vids. its under br'er and Charles Cohen" [under Music on the right - the track features the Buchla Music Easel]

  1. this system is a strange 300/500 series hybrid.. it has the 500 series keyboard however it has the 360 octal signal source.. from what I gather it was sold as a 500 and then it was rebuilt with 300 series components when the 500 stuff started to fail.. the 300 is/was much more stable.. which is why it replaced the 500.

its in the private collection of an individual.

  3. Anyone have a link for this Buchla 700 group and pix? It doesn't come up readily in Google.

  5. Charles' easel has some extra non-buchla modules built in around the edges of the case. Pretty interesting stuff.

Charles is amazing, highly recomend seeing him play if you live near nyc or Philly.

The laptop in the picture is that of David Last.

  6. The buchla 700 group is very quiet.. not a shock considering the small amount of 700s sold and the amount of working ones still around.

    they're EML circuits.

i'm playing with him 2/20 at monkey town in NYC. me, him, harp, prepared piano, upright bass, trap kit. i think some of it will be presented in quad.

  8. heh, he'll be getting pretty used to monkey town, as i played there with him at the end of december.

look out, the quad system there isn't so nice.

  10. Honestly i don't know because I just gave them a stereo pair. It is pretty weak though. I got a lot of really strange distortion even though my levels going out to it were pretty quiet. I tried cutting my lows, nothing changed, i turned my output down even more, nothing changed. It was just a kinda bad experience.

The venue itself is great though. Small and everybody faces the center. I just wish i had brought my own system.

  12. Changing direction a little here ...

One of the things that strikes me about a Buchla is the knob differentiation and varied layout. When I see a synth with lots of identical knobs on an almost uniform rectangular grid, I cringe a little, even if the synth is otherwise wonderful.

    Now, if only I could afford a 200e :(
