PAiA Steam Whistle Kit

via this auction

"Interesting and obscure Paia kit meant to emulate engine and whistle sounds for model railroad.

From the Paia catalog:
If model railroading is one of your hobbies you probably have at least one problem in common with every other railroad buff in the world--finding a steam whistle sound for your layout. If you're not inclined to invest the dough necessary to install boiler and pipes for a real whistle this design for an electronic substitute may be for you. You couldn't get any closer to the sound of a real locomotive even if you bought ol' 99 and rolled her into your living room."

Just out of curiousity, how many of you are into model train railroading as well? This is a serious question. I'll explain why later in the comments, and/or if you are, feel free to comment as well.

  1. Men who play with synths and suffer with synthesizer gear lust are geeky enough and appear pretty strange to their friends (if they actually have any) but to be a TRUE nerd you need a model railroad set up in the basement ........

  2. I'm into 1/32 slot cars but interested in model railroading.

All great hobbies. I need a break from music every now and then.

Now i wonder what's this all about here ? Let us know!

  3. Did you guys know that the average age of a model railroad enthusiast in the USA is around 55? It is a completely dying hobby. I was really into it as a kid, and I'm lucky enough to have a really good shop in my town, but it's hard to walk past the walkers, wheelchairs, and oxygen tanks...

  4. OK, the connection is I recently got into model railroading and the addiction is very similar to synths but it's much more kind to the wallet. Just like wanting to get one more module in your modular or one more synth, with trains there's alway one more engine, rolling stock (boxcars) or other. It's very modular in nature. There is a connection. When I saw this auction and the description from PAiA I was floored. I have no idea if they were serious or not, but I thought no way, my two favorite hobbies in one. I am very curious if they were serious back then.

I put the poll up because I was curious if any other synth heads were into model railroading as well. I'm relatively new to it myself. I'm just picking up the lingo and the techniques. I always wanted to check it out and finally did. I got into N-Scale and am now considering Z-Scale. I built two layouts. One about 6' x 8' with trees, river and a tunnel. The other is a whopping 85' track that goes around the ceiling of my room. I always wanted that.

Anyway it a nice way to cure GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) and there is a similarly addicting nature to it. Just like one more synth or just one more module, it's just one more rolling stock (boxcar) or one more engine. The difference is an engine for N-Scale is about $100 and a boxcar is only about $20. Of course synths are still my number one. No question about that.

  5. I used to model the NWP ancestors in HOn3 narrow gauge till my dexterity went all to hell. Sold all my brass to finance synths - lol. Still wish I'd saved that Heisler, though.

Hit me up if you want to chat, M. I might have some stuff left you can use.

  6. Erm, model railroading is certainly not dying yet, infact it can be quite geeky stuff also. Just check out http://www.miniatur-wunderland.com/. Miniatur Wunderland is a really big H0-layout with about 9 kilometers of computer controlled traintrack in Hamburg, Germany. The layout also has computer controlled carsystem and so much tiny details that when I visited it a week ago, three hours visit was way too short.

And yes, I have synths and also those little trains in both H0 and Z scale.
