MATRIXSYNTH: Synth Babes vs. Synthettes

Synth Babes vs. Synthettes

It seems a few would prefer we go back to the Synth Babes label.
I'm curious what others out there think. Pick your label!

  1. A tag like synth babes makes it feel like all the readers are male. While the majority might be, I feel like it is important to be inclusive. I honestly think the tag is uncalled for, but synthettes is clearly the lesser of two evils.

  2. The reason for the differentiation is because there are fewer synth girls.

If there was a "Synth Dudes" tag, it would be on nearly every post.

The synth babes tag draws a bit more attention to the girls doing the same things we do.

I think you're taking it a bit too personally :)

  3. are there any male synth babes?

  4. shouldn't this decision be left to the women?

  5. @joey

if it is soley for differentiation, which I don't think is necessary, then the synthettes tag, or a less patronizing tag of "synth women" should be used.

  6. The problem is if there's a picture with a female and a synth within 20 ft. she's automatically designated as a "babe" when clearly not all of them are.

But the "synthettes" label is almost too politically correct.

stylinghead, there are male synth babes! Did you forget Wendy Carlos?

  7. A synthette sounds synthetic. Whereas, most of these women seem organic and natural.

If I were a woman, it would be great to be assumptively elevated to the status of 'babe' than 'synthette' (which rings to me like a waitress in a diner with rhinestone ear-rings).

Anyway, even if it is a label that applies to mostly women, to me it is a group label. I figure not all women mind, and most men don't mind. I don't feel it's necessary to pander to a minority interest as it is just a funny blog post tag and people need to relax.

In contrast, every time I see the 'synthette' tag, I get depressed.

  8. I think the cons of gender labels outweigh the pros.

  9. neither is preferred. it's on the edge of misogyny.

  10. You should just remove the tag altogether.

  11. "I think the cons of gender labels outweigh the pros."

So we should all be androgynous and live in an anticeptic pro-logic future? Me I'll take a contradiction-full life full of passion over logic any day. It's far more interesting.

Life should be interesting, and mildly controversial.

  12. wheres the "neither" vote

  13. synthettes sounds too damn PC for my liking.
At least synth babes has a touch of sarcasm and irony to it escpecially when photos of Wendy Carlos are tagged as 'synth babes'

  14. "synth babe" seemed to me teenboy leering... nothing wrong with it, just juvenile. "synthette" is a pseudo pc euphemism, who do you think yr fooling? you could call it "masturbatory fodder for hetro male synth geeks" (again, nothing wrong w/ that)... or you could drop it altogether. one more vote for growing up.

  15. I vote for synth womyn.

But then... what category does this woman fall in?

    link

    Organ babe? Organette? Orgyn womyn?

  16. I agree w/ Daddio and Tyler. I would prefer no label. If you feel the need to use one, I'd stick with synthettes. Synth Babes makes this seem like a boy's club. My opinion entirely, but I feel strongly about it.

  17. Does anyone else think "towelette" when they see the word "synthette"? I like to see the softer side of the the synth world, but don't want to be reminded of the cold, wet towelettes that I use to clean my face off after a nice plate of ribs! That sauce is very hard to remove from my buttons and knobs on my Novation Nova.

  18. Get rid of the label altogether, matrix, unless you really feel the need for the 14-year-old-with-limited-access-to-masturbatory-material demographic. It's 2008, for fuck's sake!

  19. How about no tag at all? I personally could care less if a synth is being demoed or modeled by a guy or a girl. What difference does it really make?

If guys are seriously coming here and clicking on the "Synth Babes" tag because they want to see the entire collecton of girls with synths, they are sick, nerdy, perverts. There are better sites for that type of activity....especially since none of these "babes" compare to the quality of women that are available on sites that are MADE for your perversions.
Unless of course there is a synth babe fetish thing I don't know about, at which point your time would be better spenf looking for a real girlfriend....or in a therapists office.

  20. i agree, seeing women as sexual beings in any way is very degrading and if you find yourself aroused at all by the juxtaposition of synthesizers and attractive human females you are obviously in need of some serious psychological help. i vote for " non-male synthesizer enthusiast"

  21. It is red-hot awesome for the 90% of us dorky male tech-hounds & bloggy maroons otherwise to see any woman, whether outwardly gorgeous or not, fiddling around with what is largely (and commonly known as) a male-dominated hobby.

It's not my place to define anything, but I wanted to come to matrix's defense with an opinion that I hope is well received:

The subjects of this label are absolutely ALL babes. Any woman who is into synths is SEXY. Why? Well for me, because I'm into synths! And I have never met a woman who was. It's a fantastic concept. And by "fantastic," I fully mean "of fantasy."

All of the women in my life have merely TOLERATED this crap. So it's absolutely a fantasy to learn about all the BABES out there also genuinely into synths, and gives me hope that I'll find my own one day.

THAT, gentle friends, is a BABE. Not an object, but a subject... and one of fantasy & desire. This label could not possibly be offensive when there are no feelings but wistfulness & no intentions but complimentary ones.

So I hope the label returns, with heartfelt inclusiveness, not exclusiveness. This label would not be used to single anyone out, but to celebrate their uniqueness, just as a Moog label celebrates Moogs by helpfully referencing them!

And now I'll shut up & shut down for the night, and dream of the female synth dork I haven't met yet.

    I rest my case....

  23. Personally, I'm much more interested in posts about women composers who use(d) synths than in pictures of pretty women with synths. The recent post about Delia Derbyshire was to my liking. If the women are attractive, that's fine, but that's not the point for me here. In other words, I care about the emphasis; how we label the "babes" is immaterial to me.

If you are a male synth enthusiast and hold to the stereotypes of the male synth geek and the female synth babe, you should read this:

  24. A more complete load of politically correct bollox I have never read.

  25. maybe I'm in the minority but I have no problem with these labels. Sure it harkens back to my masturbatory teen years but so what.

On the topic of which tag stays, that choice is irrelevant to me. Just keep on of them!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hey Sensorium,

Setting aside your judgmental bullcrap, I'll defend myself by saying "fetish" is an unfairly strong word a preference for anyone who shares my common interests. So it's not a "synth fetish" per se.

No good editorial goes unpunished I guess...

    ReplyDelete
  27. "Synthette" technically refers to a diminutive, feminine synthesizer, not the person playing it.

Would Knob Ho's work for you??

Just pullin' yer leg Doc. (no, not the middle one!)

  29. Ya, "Knob Ho" would be just fine too ;)

  30. Wendy Carlos must be reading the comments and crying right about now.

Half of these women are not babes. This is all the more reason to keep the babes label.
