it sounds more like keyboards to me (not quite shure which one exactly), processed with phaser.
ReplyDeletegreat sound :)
It's got to be an ARP string Ensemble thru a phaser.
DeleteYeah, my guess is it might have been done with whatever keyboard was laying around the studio. I've seen Love and Rockets a number of times and don't remember seeing them ever play synths. Always guitar, drum and bass. I'm curious what they did for Tones on Tail live.
ReplyDeleteWhat really rings true to me is the fact that usually what notes are played is far more important than what sound the instrument is making. Tones on Tail are on many of my mix TAPES!
ReplyDeletesurprisingly Daniel Ash used very few synths in ToT, L&R and bauhaus.
ReplyDeleteHis big gimmick was using effects and other things like e-bow's and even real violin bows to 'make a guitar not sound like a guitar'.
This track is one of the few exceptions where you can definitely tell its a synth of some type but it is so sparse and basic that it could really be just about anything that happened to be laying around the studio that day
Its not even a particularly unique sound like the one they used on 'swing the heartache' (i'd LOVE to know what they used for THAT sound)
It might of been done on an Access Virus

ReplyDeleteHaha - yeah. They have been known to travel through time if you tweak the right sequence of knobs.
