Roland Jupiter 8 acting strangely

YouTube via zibbybone
"I just received this JP-8 I purchased from a seller that stated "ALL ORIGINAL LOW HOURS. WORKS GREAT, LAST OWNER USED IT FOR ONES AND TWOS." First, it pwoers up and 4 of 8 voices play. Both Solo and Unison mode produce noise. Arpeggiator does not work. Later, the synth just wigs out. Any Jupe 8 owners out there ever experience this or have any input? Sorry, the audio is a bit overdriven. "

  1. OK to start, open it up and check that all ribbon and power connections are solid - reseating is a good idea. I know that's obvious, but it's where I'd start. The booting thing seems like a power issue. Perhaps the caps need to be replaced in the PSU? I have a JP-8 and haven't seen any of these issues, but this is jut what it looks like to me. Noise from four of the eight voices... there are two boards inside with four voices each, so one of those boards isn't making it. It might not be bad VCOs, it just might be power (again). I can't be too technical here because I don't have the expertise, but check things like 110/220V operation, internal connections, etc. The thing that is the most troubling to me is when you bring the filter cutoff up it totally wigs out. All of it smacks to me like power problems though. Sorry I can't be more help - I hate to see a JP-8 in distress...

  2. Yeah, I definitely say check the power supply. You should be able to get ahold of the service manual and do checks on the voltages coming from the supply.
Verify these voltages are correct. If they aren't you can do fine adjustments through on board variable resistors. If the adjustments don't help then yes it could be a dodgy cap or even failing regulator.

I also wouldn't play around with the unit too much until you can diagnose the fault. You may introduce further complications.

  3. Get a can of "air" like they use to clean out computer stuff and blow all of the dirt and dust out of the insides. Dust has a lot of carbon in it and carbon conducts electricity. You would be amazed at how many problems are caused by this.
