Another Victim of Shipping

via Joe

"i received my Roland JD800 in the post yesterday but despite it been in a flight case it had taken a knock in delivery and the side panel is completely broken i was wondering if anybody knows where i might get a replacement part for it?"

  1. 'Flight' cases are essential for touring bands with roadies who load gear on a truck for them. Their primary function is to keep the gear inside from being crushed by other similar road cases.

A road case will, more often than not, fail to protect a keyboard from a lateral drop- yet it is the most likely form of abuse a keyboard will incur on shipment.

This is contrary to the opinion that road cases are the best form of shipment protection. I say this isn't their function. Furthermore, most road cases will add a significant amount of weight to the shipment, INCREASING the chances the keyboard will be dropped. A heavier piece is more likely to be mishandled and the added weight increases the severity of the drop.

In most cases, I don't recommend road cases as adequate shipping protection.

The manufacturer's original packaging is the best shipping container. It is far lighter, and provide better protection against lateral drops. Manufacturers have a lot of experience shipping keyboards and the design shows with large buffer areas on the ends.

If the original packaging isn't available, as is often the case, model what the original packaging does. A keyboard mummified in bubble wrap is ok, but it is better to focus your attention on the ends. Create large (large cell) bubble wrap buffers on the ends of the package so the keyboard will survive a lateral drop. The heavier the keyboard, the more attention is needed.

  2. I just want to point out the unscrupulous eBay sellers who under promises of "mint" keyboards are shipping them unproperly packaged and protected, resulting in massive damages opening up the packages at arrival.

UPS is notorious for this, yet in the States everyone goes for them simply because they package the items for the seller. This is not fair, I do not know why sellers let UPS do the packaging, either it's laziness or not doing the effort to go to the post office and get the quotes themselves.

Every time I have to buy on eBay I have to literally beg the seller to ship it via the Post Office instead, which has a better record of not destroying large items in transit. I feel so sorry for this JD-800 user!
