I vaguely remember reading that new units are still being hand built somewhere, with a long long waiting list

You can order them, apparently, and I have heard of people actually getting them, but the waiting list is years long at this point.
It's quite simple, technically.

they collect old ones and resell them for 3.5€, so I am sure a semi-cool tech can built one..
won't look as the original, but sound as one.
ok, strange idea - but in THIS case..
