Been doing a little poking around lately to try to figure out how many Fizmos remain in working condition. The consensus estimate on how many were built is 500 keyboards and 100 rack units. The Fizmo Yahoo group has a registry, and there are only 42 keyboards and 4 racks registered. (I just added mine last night.)
ReplyDeleteWas the Fizmo Ensoniq's swan song?
ReplyDeleteIt's one of those rare gems with a rough history.

aaron, I think so. All of the Fizmo keyboards have the date of manufacture on the serial number plate. From looking at the registry, it appears that manufacturing stopped at the end of January 1999, which is about the time the Creative Labs deal was going down. I need to go look at the history a bit more to figure out exactly when that happened, but it is known that Creative terminated all manufacture of Ensoniq products.

ReplyDeleteHi Guys
ReplyDeleteI believe the Ensoniq Halo came out after the Fizmo actually. There was kind of a merge between E-MU/Ensoniq Products at that point... with the E-MU Proteus 2000 line, for example, heavily featuring Ensoniq sounds.
About the number of existing Fizmo racks:

Hey all,
ReplyDeleteI am the proud owner of 2 fizmo keyed units. I am still on my never ending quest for the rack version. Sergio your pics are sweet.
