Novation Nova

  1. I had one of these for a while. The addition of the VCO mode in OS 4.x really added to the analog emulation. I was able to get some very satisfying old school sounds from it. I'd say it's a great instrument, save for a few annoying flaws:

    a) The "chit!" beeping sound whenever a button is pushed. It's not in the audio signal, but emitted from the synth's hardware itself. Highly annoying and it cannot be turned off.

    b) The hard assignment of filter cutoff and resonance to controllers other than 74 and 71. They're something like 105 or 106, making it impossible for me to control either parameter from my Roland XP-30 or E-mu Command Station, neither of which would transmit controllers over 99. Why couldn't they use the standard CCs?

Individual effects processing for each of the 6 channels is nice, though the reverb is too metallic for its own good and I frequently turned it off.

  2. "The 'chit!'"

That's pretty funny and oh so true.
