Yes, there was a law suit. And ARP won. They copied the Odyssey a little too close.
ReplyDeleteYou could be right. I didn't have time to look it up when I put this up. I checked Mark Vail's Vintage Synthesizers and Peter Forest's A-Z of Analogue Synthesizers. According to Mark Vail's Vintage Synthesizers, one account states that ARP went after them initially for the duophonic implementation and discovered the synth was a literal copy of the Odyssey based on the schematics, and won. Other sources in the book (next paragraph) state ARP lost their suit and the Cat remained in production from 1977 to 1981. Peter Forrest's A-Z books is also inconclusive. If I recall correctly I heard from a somewhat reliable source that the threat of a lawsuit occurred but an actual lawsuit never happened. It is interesting that this little bit of history may be lost.
