Update: another tip from Loren: "people ought to also take photos of thier gear in their homes... insurance companies want to SEE that stuff to give concrete proof that the gear was owned by the individual that was robbed. - Loren"
Something else I heard was to mark your synth on the inside or underside. Not too crazy about marking the original condition of a synth, and having people open them up, but for older used analog gear, the marks might already be there. Photograph them and keep them online somewhere.
