  1. "Nobody bought the hardware, so we'll write it as a VST and sell it that way!" Yeah, because that worked out so well for Hartmann.

  2. Maybe to market it they should approach there customer in a way that doesn't say, "I thank yo be retodded so I say it to ya dis way, dawg."

Serious, when I think Beat Thang or Beat Kangs I think of stereotypical African Americans that will try to "hustle" you out of your money instead of a legitimate business with a working and usable product.

Is that the sterotype then. Thanks for the insight. *rolleyes*

  4. btw, I didn't know the hardware actually came out.

  5. @moni Not racist but I am from South East Kansas/North East Oklahoma and if you told someone from here about the product based on the product pages description they would visualize someone wearing a clock as a necklace, silver in their mouth, and 30 inch chrome rims wrote that as a JR High English paper.

Plus I didn't even go into details of ripping on the marketing. I could go a day based on each sentence alone. They dug a deep hole solely targeting hip hop culture. If the device and software actually performs the way they poorly explain it will then it would have many many many more applications and prospective customers. IE it could of been the next MPC. But all the site throws at me is it will make you a "ballin hip hop kang." Wheres mah grill because I gots to make mah beats now.

  6. Ah, if only everyone could write impeccable english like you GoodVillain. It could of been amazing, serious.

  7. @GoodVillain,
I'm not taking about the marketing (that appears to be over the top.) I am taking issue with your idea of "Stereotypical African Americans."

If you don't actually know any African Americans, consider me your data point of one that doesn't fit your idea hustling, grills and rims.

    Peace.

  8. Actually the marketing made a degree of sense, in that it targeted exactly the people who jumped all over the MPC. I just got the impression that it was being rather cynically / shallowly targeted in that direction... frankly, it looks as though they're selling it as a lifestyle accessory, rather than a practical competitor to the MPC; and that's the problem. I'd find it patronising, personally - every bit as patronising as someone selling an analogue synth with a jet black paint job, pink trim and fake dayglo tubing and |/\|R171N6 4LL 7H31R CP0Y IN 13375P33|< in an ostentatious move to target the EBM community. It's crap. Anyone serious about making that kind of music will see through it, and go elsewhere; anyone who buys an instrument on image is, by definition, not serious.

The old Akai, and the current Access, have demonstrated neatly the only effective way to appeal to a particular market: PRODUCE EXACTLY THE INSTRUMENT THEY WANT. Anything else is just for the wannabes, and only the wannabes will touch it. And if by some stroke of genius Beat Kangz HAVE produced the instrument the hiphop community want, the bling is only going to detract from that by making it look more suspect than it really is.

Sorry to go off on one. I just REALLY don't like cynical marketing ploys.

  9. Hey! Thanks for your interest in the Beat Thang, the Kangz and what we do.

We take your feedback seriously, and I'd like to address some misconceptions.

First of all, the Beat Thang hardware hasn't been released yet. We're taking pre-orders now, and will ship in October 2009. We got great feedback at Winter NAMM, so we made some changes based on user feedback. Those include an all-metal housing, and a faster processor.

Beat Thang Virtual is a software version that started as a companion piece, but really is sick. The video of me playing it was literally the first time I got to touch it. It's fun and easy to use.

Your criticism that we're "stereotypical African Americans" is curious. We've heard that because of the language we use, but frankly, our founders are southerners. It's how some of us talk in Tennessee.

At the same time, it isn't our intention to come off as cynical or condescending. We're having fun. Trust me. We laugh a lot. Music and music making should be fun. Our "over the top" marketing is a reflection of our sense of humor.

But we've taken to heart your comments and those of others who have expressed similar viewpoints. We certainly don't want you to feel like this product isn't for you without you trying it first.

We've redesigned the website, and you'll see that the copy is more inclusive, especially of musicians of all styles. We're still us, but we don't want there to be any thought that we don't respect all artists, no matter the genre, who are serious about their craft.

As for the race issue, I won't even address that. People are people, and artists are artists. Ray Charles once said, there are only two types of music - good and bad. That's our philosophy. We just want to make it easier and more fun to make good music.

And we want to be ourselves, and have fun while we do it.

  11. @moni I guess you should read up on what stereotypical means to understand what I mean. No I do not think that of all African Americans or else I wouldn't of even mentioned how obvious that it was stereotypical.

  12. @GoodVilain,
you really do seem to be missing the point. Nice try with the suggestion to look up the meaning of stereotype.

  13. @moni It was a serious suggestion.

  14. Have a nice day GoodVillain.

  15. Thanks, @Rene.

You'll get the software when you play it. It's the same user interface as the Thang. Really user-friendly.

Look for more video over from NAMM.
