LinnDrum II Update

via Roger Linn Design

"Update - July 9, 2009:

We’re still hard at work but regrettably won't be able to meet our earlier estimate of a 3rd-quarter 2009 ship date. The recent changes in the economy have caused us to rethink our design, which had become too expensive. One problem is that Dave’s customers and my customers had different views of what the product should be, so we had been working on a more elaborate design that we thought would please them both. Then the economy tanked. Oops. The other issue is that Dave and his team have been having such success with their analog synths that they’ve been spreading themselves pretty thin trying to work on both projects.

So given these circumstances, we’d prefer not to state another release date estimate at this time, but when we do we promise to post it here along with any other information we’re able to release. Also, given that Dave and his team have their hands pretty full and that a beat-oriented product is more of a Roger product anyway, we’ll probably be selling it through Roger Linn Design instead of from both companies as we had previously considered.

I’d personally love to tell everybody all the details of the product design, features and price as we did with our initial designs of the product, but there’s that pesky problem of keeping the information from our competitors. So we need to keep tight-lipped for now and regrettably can’t answer any questions. Thanks also to those who have kindly asked to place advance orders. However, we don’t feel it’s right to accept orders until we are able to release the price or more information about the product.

And now I must get back to work. :)

- Roger"

  1. We need a synth version of sadtrombone.com for such occasions.

  2. I think it's good news.

First it IS more of a Linn thing than a DSI thing, maybe this will result in a more coherent product.

Second, well, they haven't dropped the project yet.

  4. oh come on. the same old "linndrum's going to be cool, but we're not telling you why and it won't get released in time" again. screw that.

  5. Agreed, the Linn Drum has lost my vote. Sorry but it's a delay to far, I'd say we're at vaporware stage. Also I'm nervous about DSI's reduced involvment, DSI have more resources than Linn. The Adrenalinn's are innovative and interesting products but they're limited. They should have at least released some details to keep peoples interest.

Yup, totally over it. Looks like it's a Machinedrum + MPC5000 for me.

  6. If you'd seen the design last fall I think you would have agreed they'd gone overboard. It had a large full color LCD and was running on a mini-ITX system board. It had turned into a $3k+ workstation. I think they need to be targeting $1500.

  7. "One problem is that Dave’s customers and my customers had different views of what the product should be"

WHO are they talking to? EVER? DSI never listened when I offered my opinions and subsequently lost me as a user and future customer. Linn? Whose customer base over the last ten years at least has been solely guitarists maybe? Please. If they want real advice, they ought to ask regulars at this site and at AH list. This kind of faux-pander-talk bugs the crap out of me.

  10. As someone who held off buying either an MPC or a Machinedrum in anticipation of this unit, this certainly gives me pause. I have no doubt that DSI/Linn can craft an interesting project, but can it ever be a transcendent product in the drum machine space? That's the real question, in my opinion. It needs to be the kind of drum machine that a unit like the Korg ESX-1 only hints at: sampling with an efficient GUI, analog synthesis and/or filtering stage, on-board effects, rock-solid internal clock, etc. But I guess we'll have to wait until 2010 to learn more...
