1939 Hammond Novachord

via Dan Wilson who is looking for other owners in Europe. If you know of any contact him here.

"The Novachord is widely accepted to be the world's first polyphonic subtractive synthesizer. The instrument is about the size to two spinet pianos, contains 163 tubes and weighs 250Kg! Despite it's age the instrument features an early implementation of ADSR envelopes, a resonant filter and a full divide down oscillator architecture.

1069 were built and there are believed to be less than 200 still in existence."

Don't miss CMS' The Novachord Restoration Project for some samples and more info. Previously posted in 2005.

  1. The Novachord is an incredible early analog polyphonic synthesiser. I've got four of them. One of these days I hope to recreate the sensation of 1939 World's Fair. I also host a Yahoo! Group for Novachord owners and fans, sign up at novachord-subscribe@yahoogroups.com and we could sure use some chatty members. (Hi Dan, fancy meeting you here!)
