The Human League (Phil Oakey) - Interview
YouTube via interjet. via fischek. Emu Emulator.
Note what he says at 4:45 about Blade Runner. I'm guessing he means emulator and not Emulator. Interesting...
"Broadcasted April or May 1983.
Taken from a ITV 1 programme called TV AM."

"You do? GOOD HEAVENS!" haha.
ReplyDeleteThe level of ignorance is staggering but I suppose that's to be expected. Angela Rippon in her pomp there.
ReplyDeletePhil does seem genuinely confused by the Bladerunner soundtrack, although that's hard to believe. It's like he's suggesting it must have all been sampled otherwise how else could it have been done? I would have thought that he was familiar enough with synths in general and Vangelis in particular (who made no secret of the synths he used) to understand how it was done. Perhaps he was just blown away by the production or was making a general point even though he knew the Emulator was really only part of the make-up of Bladerunner.
nice pot of tea
ReplyDeleteyes a very quaint intersection of the British establishment and the younger folks.. I've always loved that video.
ReplyDeleteWho knows, maybe he saw it at the theater and thought it sounded liked sampled (pitched up / down) strings and made an educated guess ..
Look at his earrings ! It was a "morning show"- maybe too early for Phil...........
