I almost put this one up on MATRIXYSNTH-B but found the MULTI-DIMENTIONAL reference on the user manual interesting enough for a post here. Click the image below. The Kawai K5 is a digital additive synhth. Instead of raw waveforms for oscillators you add harmonics to create sound. I'm not sure on the K5, but on the K5000s editing is similar to editing bands on an equalizer in that you have a row of various harmonics that you can individually adjust. You can route envelopes and LFOs to them as well.

"Multidimensional" sounds way more interesting than "boring additive synthesis that sounds like a cheap Casio."
ReplyDeleteEverything I've heard from a K5 was not so impressive. I'd love someone to point me to some good K5 examples; someone has to have conquered the K5.
I've conquered the K-5. I used one in school to write a piece of Avant Garde Music.

I did all the sound design and used two K-5s with Performer for the Mac. This was in 1992. Let me know what you think...
Awesome. I updated the post with your demo. I get a bit of traffic, so I created a mirror for the link. Let me know if you'd like your mp3 link active instead.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to pop it in my SoundCloud account tonight so I'll send along the link when I'm done. No access to that site at work.
ReplyDeleteThat's really nice and very different from any other K5 stuff I've heard. It's not quite as harsh as FM, but obviously not an analog synth either.
ReplyDeleteDid you write your patches on the K5 itself or did you use a computer editor? If so, which one?
Yes. I did all the editing on the K5 itself. It was actually fairly painless once you got used to how the "pages" in the display were laid out. To the best of my knowledge there weren't any editors. I stored all the patches on a Apple diskette via a sysex dump through performer.
ReplyDeleteI've been an owner of MIDI Quest and it has an editor for the K5 as well as all the other synths I have.
Korg Triton LE76
Roland U220
Kwai K5m (Rack version of the K5)
Plus I use Omnisphere and Absynth

I like the sounds you programmed. Really nice, yet odd ambient stuff.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting! I *really* wish I could bid on this....but Christmas is coming for my kids.
Hey all. I uploaded the track to soundcloud. Please use that link to listen. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteMatrix, Feel free to put this link where you see fit.

Perfect. Thanks. I updated the post and put a new one up.
ReplyDeleteNice piece! I wish I had the time to really dig into additive synthesis.
ReplyDeleteIt went for $154 plus $50 shipping.
