Synergy II Demo

YouTube via cscairney
"The Synergy Synthesizer was manufactured by Digital Keyboards from 1982 to 1985. Its a pretty rare instrument and I've found it to be a very expressive instrument for having only very limited control over the individual tones.
The sounds played here are the ones stored in the internal memory."

  1. It's actually a great synth. The problem is the "preset" limits how many sounds you get. They sold cartridges with another set of sounds - you had to buy them, but also Preset (only slightly variable). There is a KayPro computer option to use CP/M to program it, but very difficult to use. One tech made me a "cart" with 16 banks of sounds on it - I have hundreds now to choose from. Much better, and it sure does have a nice tone for a digi synth.

  2. Looks like he has at least three cartridges - one in the machine and two on top.

I thought you could program every partial as an additive synth?

  3. I was this close >pinches fingers< to buying one of these in the early 90's. Demo shows some nice sounds.

  4. I have the Mach 1 version that has no rs232 port or MIDI (though, weirdly, I got a Kaypro II computer with it - if anyone out there has an upgrade kit - PLEASE get ahold of me through youtube -MarsHottentot)with 6 carts.

I've found that you can actually edit the synth pretty dramatically just on it's face - you just need to be creative. Some sounds are more responsive to tweaking than others, but those sounds are amazing!

Mine came with a very odd instruction manual. I think it's actually the master copy - It's in a plain 3 ring binder without any graphics. The pages seem to have been printed by a machine and have the diagrams taped onto their corresponding pages. In the back The Index page is blank except for saying "(to be written)". There is a hand written page from 1984 with company phone numbers (one is for 'Peter') as well as prices for upgrades:

    1. MIDI retrofit: $400
    2. RS232 Computer Interface: $150
    3. Basic Srs 6 Ram Carts: $129 EA
    4. Wendy Carlos Srs: Carts 1-3 $299 for all. Cart 4. 129

The page notes that Synergy's are compatible with Kaypro and Osborne computers.

The Osborne is something I hadn't seen anywhere else.

Mine also came with a brochure for the Synergy II as well as a Synergy 1 poster - WHOOO!
