Rare BUCHLA 500 Modules

via this auction
"Extremly rare BUCHLA electric music box series 500 modules. ....only 3 exemplars ever made in the world!!! The cv interface module need of PSU and maybe the computer facilities directed to the series 500 computer system... I'm convinced that the joysticks and trigger, control voltages module can drive other modular systems with a right psu of course, they have a Cinch Jones plug for Power Supply and a pair of facilities connectors in the rear part. I don't know the right voltage that they need, I haven't any schematics.. I bought them for collection but ..I think they need of a new home with other Buchla brothers ;-) Amazing: the two devices!"
joysticks are photosensitive built with optoisolators ..so the sticks are luminescent...a primitive but charming

  1. I've already posted about this over on Muff Wiggler - but for anyone hoping to get much out of these modules, think again. The larger of the two panels is the interface for the 500 series computer and oscilloscope, the smaller is simply a 329 patchbay, also for interfacing with the computer. The computer and oscilloscope had many custom modifications and such. There are no audio generating circuits in these modules. The only things that could be of use, assuming it still would power up, would be the 5 red knobs and two joysticks below the logos on the larger panel. The output jacks for these are to their right. The knobs simply provide offsets in the range of 0-10V, the joysticks an X/Y coordinate of 10V each.

Little more than very handsome paperweights unfortunately.

  2. These are rare? I have a couple propping up the front of my trailer because I needed the cinder blocks for something else.

  3. Thousand Euro paperweights as of this morning. I guess somebody out there wants a very expensive pair of joystick controllers. You can see from the photos of the backsides, there's hardly anything in them!!!

  4. Hello, I raised the rods to make a picture on optoisolators, so the two sticks are here, don't worry...
Usable in part or not, these are two rare BUCHLA modules series 500 and no paperweights or stamps. Some bidders (that I know) are American old Buchla users and they know very well what to buy... Thanks for your interest

  5. Paperweights or no, they are indeed interesting collectibles. I have 500 series documents covering these interfaces, and thus some familiarity with the circuitry involved.

If anyone would want to drop such serious $$$ on 360 panel and motherboard - please do contact me.
It doesn't do anything without a computer either!

  6. I think it would be very interesting project to reverse engineer this and design a modern computer interface for it.
