New D-50 patches

YouTube via TheSynthFreq — April 19, 2010 — "Here is a improv video of some new patches I wrote for the Roland D-50 linear synthesizer. The bass patch used in the last song was a preset on the Yamaha DX-9 FM synthesizer. I have had this DX-9 for about 4 days and I am really enjoying getting into FM synthesis and understanding the Fourier series as well as using sine waves to create sounds. It is a big adjustment though , since the DX series synths do not have a filter since modulation between the oscillators create complex frequencies that are controlled with modulation instead of an actual dedicated cutoff frequency. I really like how sidebands in FM sound so cool. Sidebands are actually aliasing and are most of the time not wanted, but it just sounds so awesome for metallic sounds.
Please enjoy!

  2. Sidebands in FM synthesis are not aliasing, i.e. they are not a product of sampling but rather a desirable effect of modulation of waveforms. The sidebands for audio-rate modulation form harmonics of the resulting signal. And I agree, they sound cool.

  3. @ MB: I guess it depends on what the programmer is trying to create. :)
I am referring to the phase inversion ,reflected sidebands. I also enjoy messing around with the waveforms and bringing them into and out of phase and matching different tunings and just making something neat out of sine waves. I am so used to square and saw waves, that sine waves are different, but fun to work with. Thanks for your comment. :)
